Megathon 2013

This past weekend, possibly the largest programmer event in Spain took place: the Megathon 2013.

National event of the .NET community, oriented to the development of applications for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, which has brought together from April 12 to 14 to more than 700 developers in 14 Spanish cities.

Spend an entire weekend typing code

As in the 2012 edition, I was monitoring the entire weekend of the event, participating, as in the previous year, as a talkative blogger.

You could already see the excellent response that the community was having in the previous weeks, due to the constant announcement of new venues in different cities, and the cross messages on Twitter where the participants were finding out to know.

Another excellent idea on the part of the organizers was to carry out during the month prior to the celebration of the Megathon 2013, a series of technical talks via the Web by the most important mentors of the .NET community, including MVPs, MAPs and all those professionals willing to share their knowledge with attendees.

Thus, when the appointed weekend arrived, all venues were completely full. Even forcing coordinators from various cities to have to change their physical venue to accommodate so many participants.

And, at the Madrid headquarters – at the University – the entire room set up was packed with people of all ages and conditions, willing to spend a weekend building an app from scratch.

Ideas and results are impressive

The winning application in Madrid tried to kill Zombies

The participants of the 2013 Megathon in Madrid, who developed an application with a social vocation, could also participate in the Social Hackathon that was held simultaneously at Casa de América. And, finally, two applications built in the Madrid Megathon took the first two places.

Although it has been impossible to follow the multitude of apps presented in the 14 cities, not even the winners, it is true that in this second call the ideas have been simply spectacular.

Thus, taking just over 1 and a half days to build an app for Windows 8 or Windows Phone8, incredibly many participants developed apps for both devices.

But in these events not everything is scheduled, and motivated by one of the sponsors of the event, the different venues showed an excellent sense of humorwhen organizing and recording videos of Harlem Shake, and of which the space only allows me to bring the one I like the most – Córdoba - and how it was made in Madrid.

Finally, I want to share the short video where we are almost all the participants from the Madrid headquarters, the event having finished. And that it is a good example of the spirit that surrounded the Megathon.
