With the help of Intel, Lenovo's new laptops "pass" passwords to provide user security
Table of contents:
It is one of the most important user concerns today: keeping your personal data safe on any electronic device (or not) that is likely to store it. In this sense tablets, _smartphones_ and computers occupy the _podium_ in terms of the amount of sensitive data they can store
To try to provide security to safeguard that data we have seen different systems over the years. The use of the PIN, unlock patterns (more or less ingenious), fingerprint readers, iris scanners or the latest, facial recognition. As we can see, the alternatives are numerous, but if we look closely, almost all of them are used only on mobile phones and tablets, but where are the computers? Improving security is what they are looking for at Lenovo and Intel and they want us to not have to use the old password systems
And these two companies announced yesterday a solution for PCs that provides simpler and more secure online authentication when users start session on some websites that traditionally require the use of a username and a _password_. This is the case of pages such as PayPal, Google, Dropbox, Facebook…
Intel and Lenovo's proposal is to offer an alternative for logging into this type of service A way for the user would have access by simply touching the integrated fingerprint reader via Universal Authentication Framework (UAF) or by Intel Online Connect through U2F (Second Universal Factor).
Using fingerprint reader
This first alternative that they offer is based on the use of fingerprint readers that some laptops include and have support for UAF identification (Universal Authentication Framework). Access is done in this way in a similar way to what we can do on a _smartphone_ improving security and simplicity of access.
Intel Online Connect
Intel Online Connect is a system compatible with 7th and 8th generation Intel Core processors that allows you to integrate FIDO identity verifiers and that offers simple and safe operation. After authenticating on a page like the ones seen above, the user will have access to a U2F system window in which, as a two-step unlock mode (Double Factor Authentication ) you will need to _click_ to confirm your identity.
Owners of some Lenovo computers with Intel 7th and 8th generation processors will be eligible to benefit from Intel OnLine Connect. These are the computers that can use this system after downloading the necessary _software_.
