Toshiba Portege Z20t
Table of contents:
In the context of the return of the stylus that is happening at this CES 2015, and about which we already mentioned when talking about the Toshiba Encore 2 Write, we now have to introduce you to the Toshiba Portege Z20t, a convertible ultraportable that aims to compete in the same segment as the Surface Pro 3 offering greatVersatility, Power and Portability
But while on the Surface all the equipment is contained within the screen, and the keyboard simply plays the role of a protective cover, on the Portege Z20t it offers us a somewhat different proposal: it is aultrabook with removable screen, which, being separated from the rest of the equipment, allows it to be used in tablet mode. The keyboard, in turn, works as a docking station, allowing you to extend the battery life almost twice, and have more ports and connections."
Even so, the processor (an Intel Core M) and other essential components remain next to the screen, so that the screen can function independently in tablet mode. This screen offers us a Full HD resolution with IPS technology, 12.5 inches in size and multi-touch support with up to 10 touch points.
And as we already mentioned, the equipment includes a Wacom digital pen capable of detecting up to 2048 pressure points. A positive detail in this section is that Toshiba also includes a replacement pen identical to the original, inserted in one of the slots on the equipment ( although I imagine that it is much It makes more sense to leave that second pen at home, and use the slot to store the main pen while on the go.)
The keyboard is backlit and resistant to spills, and also contains an Accupoint stylus that seeks to complement the use of the trackpad, along with 4 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, Ethernet, VGA ports, and a slot to lock the display to prevent it from disengaging. In terms of design, we are trying to captivate with a premium magnesium finish in black.
Toshiba Portege Z20t as tablet
Although many of the 2-in-1 convertibles that are launched on the market end up f altering in tablet mode due to excessive weight, this does not seem to be one of those cases, since screen/tablet weighs just 725 grams alone, falling halfway between the weight of the Surface Pro 3 (798 grams) and iPad Retina (652 grams) . The thickness is not excessive either: just 8.9 millimeters, almost equivalent to that of a Lumia 830.
When also considering the dock-keyboard, the weight of the equipment rises to 1.5 kilograms, which is reasonable for a 12.5-inch laptop. And judging by some company images (like the one above) it looks like the display can be docked away from the keyboard, so you can easily type on it without that we have to separate the equipment into 2 pieces.
Tablet mode is also not far behind in terms of sensors, since GPS, e-compass, accelerometer, sensor are included ambient light and gyroscope (the same ones that are present in the Toshiba Encore 2 Write), and also includes 2 cameras (rear and front, 5 and 1 megapixels respectively), and miniUSB and mini HDMI ports.
Other specifications, price and availability
When it comes to battery, we are promised an impressive autonomy of 9, 1 hours in tablet mode, which increase to 17.4 hours when connecting the screen to the keyboard-dock, more than enough for a full day of work.
The Toshiba Portege Z20t also includes 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth 4.0. Within its configuration options, it allows you to choose up to 8 GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 256 GB of SSD storage, and even allows you to choose the operating system, giving you the option of use Windows 7 ( although given the prominence of touch functions on this computer, the most reasonable thing to do is to opt for Windows 8.1).
The Toshiba Portege Z20t will go on sale in late January for $1,400 in its base configuration, which unfortunately will not include a stylus digital. To qualify for this accessory, we will have to purchase a more advanced configuration, which will cost $1,800.
