Dell also took part in CES 2015 announcing the renewal of its popular XPS laptops 13 and XPS 15 And in the case of the smallest member of the family, the presentation has left more than one with their mouths open in surprise due to the new Nearly borderless display Dell debuts on this year's XPS 13.
This is the product of an exclusive collaboration with the manufacturer Sharp, started almost 2 years ago, and which has allowed the screen of the Dell XPS 13 expect a tiny edge of just 5.2mmAnd because this technology was developed under an exclusive agreement, the XPS 13 is expected to be the only ultrabook we'll see this year with a bezel this small.
What advantages does this screen give us beyond the aesthetic? Mainly being able to enjoy a smaller computer: the Dell XPS 13 has almost the same dimensions as an 11-inch MacBook Air, but with a significantly larger screen. We obtain a team where it is more comfortable to work, without being bigger or heavier.
In the most complete model, this screen offers us a QHD+ resolution (3200 x 1800) with touch support In terms of processors, the This year's XPS 13 makes use of the new fifth-generation Intel Core (Broadwell) in its i3, i5 and i7 variants, with integrated graphics card. You can also choose between 4 or 8 GB of RAM, and opt for a storage of up to 512 GB SSD (an advance compared to the 256 GB that was allowed in the previous generation).
Thanks to the borderless screen it has been possible to also reduce the weight of the equipment, which goes from 1.37 kilograms to just 1 , 18 kilograms in the model without touch capability (the weight rises to 1.2 kg when including this function). In terms of ports and connectivity, it includes 2 USB 3.0 connections, a Mini DisplayPort port, a full-size SD card reader, WiFi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0
Regarding the battery, we are promised a duration of between 12 and 15 hours, depending on the type of screen we choose: the models with a touch screen and QHD+ resolution will have a shorter autonomy than those with a Full HD screen and without touch support.
In any case, regardless of the model we will enjoy greater autonomy than that existing in the previous generation, which is achieved thanks to Broadwell processors and the increased energy efficiency of UltraSharp displays.
Dell XPS 13 Pricing and Availability
Contrary to what we might think, the new generation Dell XPS 13 will be more affordable than the previous one, by lowering the price of $1,099 entry at just 799 for the most basic model, which features an Intel Core i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB of SSD storage and a screen Full HD non-touch.
In addition, all models, regardless of their internal components, use the same exterior design with a borderless screen and carbon fiber finish, so the entry model The Dell XPS 13 becomes a very attractive option if we are looking for a quality ultrabook that doesn't cost us so much.
The new Dell XPS 13 are already available to buy from the Dell website in the United States, but not from Spain or Latin America. There is no information yet on when availability will be extended to these other countries.
Dell XPS 15 is updated with 4K resolution
The big brother in the XPS family, the Dell XPS 15 also gets an update, but with much more modest changes. The only new feature of the 2015 model is the ability to opt for a 4K (3840 x 2160)resolution display instead of QHD+, which was the highest resolution allowed before . Other than that, no other changes are introduced, not even the processors are renewed, which are still fourth-generation Intel Core.
Of course, according to Daniel Rubino, who had the opportunity to test the equipment for a couple of minutes at CES, scaling to 4K resolution is very well implementedon the computer, allowing usability problems that usually accompany this type of screen to be reduced to a minimum.
The autonomy of the new XPS 15 would be around 5 hours, which although not impressive, does represent a quite acceptable figure for a device with such a resolution. However, Dell will continue to provide the option to purchase models with lower resolution, and therefore, longer battery life.
The Dell XPS 15 with 4K resolution will go on sale in early February in the United States, with no information yet regarding its commercialization in the rest of the world.
