The Acer Iconia W5 is a small hybrid (transformable) that combines in a single device an ultrabook and a 10” tablet, with an Intel Atom core and full Windows 8.x support.
In a first classification, this is a mid-range equipment, which offers a hard plastic finish, which has its advantages and disadvantages. And it has already been revised many times, in many places since 2012 when it was first announced.
Today I want to share with readers an up close and personal analysis, after ACER has left me a piece of equipment for weeks.

Ultrabook Weight
Using it as an ultrabook, the first thing that is surprising is how heavy it is for a device of contained measurementsThis is because the base is really a single and large battery, which extends the use disconnected from the network to more than 12 or 15 hours, although I have managed to reach two days (resting at night).
The keyboard is tiny, as expected in a computer of this size, and the touch is very Acer. That is, it is not extraordinary but it allows you to write with enough speed and feedback for most users.
The equipment with the base weighs a little more than expected.
Another thing I would have hoped, as I've discussed on other teams, is that they had added some sort of storage unit to the baseSo I only have, by hand, the capacity included in the tablet; having, yes, a port to use Micro SD cards as secondary storage.
The connectivity of the base is dual, that is to say there are only two connectors: a complete USB and the power connector that, as they all do, it uses its own mouth incompatible with any other source; and even with other equipment in the house.
And here Acer has gone one step further, ceasing to also be compatible with the power supply cable itself. I suppose it will be to be able to change the connector quickly and easily, but it presents me with a real problem if I lose any of the component parts.
The Pad is standard, with nothing to point out other than that it is comfortable, sensitive and effective. Come on, what is expected of the touch panel to control the equipment with the pointer.
Light plastic tablet
The connector that joins the base with the tablet seemed especially robust and comfortable both for unhooking and hooking the touch part of the keyboard base. I liked how easy it is to detach and anchor the tablet part when closed on the base.
Once the tablet is in my hand, I feel even more clearly that the finish is plastic, causing me doubts about what would happen if it fell from the top of a table onto a hard floor.
But on the other hand, it's light. Possibly the lightest Windows 8 tablet I've tested, and it's also very comfortable. This is how I managed to spend hours reading lying down during the analysis, even typing comments or tweets with my thumbs.
It is curious that the processor is located on the top right, since it is not usual to feel the heat of the processor. Not much, but enough to make it remarkable. Of course, it does not have a fan and does not make the slightest noise.
Possibly Windows 8 10" tablet >
But if I want to make noise, I have to point out the good built-in speakers. And more when there are only two slots at the bottom of each side, but they sound especially good. The disadvantage that it is right where I put my hands to hold the tablet, changing the quality and volume of the audio depending on the grip, becomes an advantage when I can use my palms as a sounding board , gaining bass and volume.
Connectivity is very good: MicroSD, mini USB, mini HDMI and audio jack. Running away from the proprietary connectors that are so often seen in other devices, and making this tablet much more standard.
To this we must add the power port, being curious that I can power the base or the tablet separately.
Touch screen and performance
As I said before, it is a 10” tablet with a 5-point 1366x768 resolution, which is very good for consuming videos or imagesHowever, I'm guessing from the pixel density, using the desktop is a feat worthy of younger, more fit eyes.
Black is black, colors vibrant and bright enough for normal use. It's not the best screen I've tested (possibly the Surface is better), but it more than gets the job done. And I forgot about any inconvenience thanks to its light weight and ease of handling.
The response is a little slow and inaccurate. I imagine that the first is because of the processor (the smallest in the Intel Atom range) and the second because of the screen's own capabilities.
The future of seems to come hand in hand with Intel Atom.
From time to time, if I asked for a lot of processing like the web version of the tweetdeck client, I would sometimes get stuck, with no response for a few moments. I have even inadvertently left the entire system vibrating up and down (literally) until I changed orientation or rebooted.
It is certainly faster than, for example, a Surface RT, and that comes with a full Windows 8. And when I upgraded to Windows 8.1 – which has to be docked or the installation fails – its performance improved a lot.
The least good
Even improving with the update of the operating system, it is noticeable that it is a first generation Wintel equipment and that the Intel Atom version that It is a little short, but only a little.
The cameras that it includes are, simply, bad It may be the unit of analysis, but both have a fairly mediocre quality, even being Full HD in video and 8Mpx in static shots. It is the perfect example that figures are worthless if the optics are not up to par.
To get the great sale price, does not include Office. Which I think is wrong because I think it's a cornerstone and a very good reason to buy a Windows 8 PC.
Also I really missed a base, to be able to place the tablet on top of a table in a vertical position, without having to put it in base.
Finally the plastic finish, which places the team in a range below what it really is; being too easy to give it a black scratch for the rest of its useful life.
Acer Iconia W5, conclusions
This equipment is very good for its price, especially if what is most important is the battery life to be able to build content. It works correctly, and it is a complete Windows 8, which supports the upgrade to 8.1 without problems. The only thing that puts me off is that the first version is from 2012, and more and more powerful versions are coming out, as Intel develops its Atom family more and more . In fact, I think the version without a base but that includes Office Home may be more interesting, for €90 less. But that happens with everything related to technology, the future is always betterIn favor
- Battery duration
- Lightness of the tablet
- Wintel
Against
- Excessive weight with base
- Plastic finish
- Slowness of touch reaction
