This weekend is being quite fruitful in devices that have come within our reach by attending the second edition of the Megathon, the largest programmer event in Spain with more than 700 participants, located in 14 cities.
On Friday we published a first look at the brand new Nokia Lumia 720, and today I bring the first sensations and review of a Surface PRO. And as a bonus, the gorgeous physical keyboard that can be purchased with the tablet.
Surface PRO, a complete Windows tablet
Unlike Windows RT tablets, which have suffered quite a bit of criticism and a level ">
It's still a relatively heavy device, especially compared to Asus' magnificent RT tablets, but knowing that we have a fully optimized i5, which gets a windows rating of 5, 5, I don't give it much importance.
It's certainly lighter than most ultrabooks and has, thanks to the excellent keyboard that comes with the Type Cover of the unit I've tested, everything of both worlds.
It's a very nice feeling to see the speed with which an application as heavy as Visual Studio 2012 opens, the Development tool par excellence in the Microsoft ecosystem. Or how I have access to a full desktop Office 2013, including Outlook.
Modern UI works smoothly, with a very good touch screen response; to what all Surfaces RT have accustomed us.And about which I could only point out how well the most common games run - which is not surprising with the components it integrates.
The Keyboard Type Cover
Although it is true that it is an accessory that can be acquired with the RT, I have finally been able to put my paws on it in the PRO tablet that I am talking about in this article. And the conclusion is conclusive: the keyboard of the Type Cover is the best on the market currently.
I have a full QWERTY in front of me, without a separate numeric keypad, which surprises both its touch and its response, considering that it is only millimeters thick. In the performance test that I submit to all the keyboards that I test, it has been the best and most comfortable that I have found, including keyboards from ultrabooks and laptops in the sample.
Even, outperforms all low to mid-range USB keyboards you can buy at any computer store.
The included Pad does the job, being a little small if that. But keep in mind that it certainly shouldn't be used except in desktop applications where it's more comfortable to use the mouse. Which on a Surface, are rather few.
It has certainly left the rubbery keyboard of the Touch Cover that comes standard on Azure tablets far behind; and that, personally, I don't like it at all because of the strange sensation it returns when pressing the area that represents the keys.
And to make matters worse, almost the same bulk as the rubber keyboard, when used as a rigid cover, to protect the screen tablet.
Conclusions
Now yes. At the end of the torture session to which I have subjected the Surface PRO, I have to admit that, finally, I had that little bug behind my ear that said ">yes, it meets all expectations I have on a modern TabletPC.
Powerful, useful, light, comfortable and that allows me to use all the extensive library of software and hardware that I carry in my backpack of junk. And if you add the excellent keyboard of the Type Cover, you have a tablet that becomes a fully functional notebook.
Let iPads and Androids tremble, when this device hits the market and is one year old.
