Accompanying the new build for PCs that launched just two days ago, today Microsoft released a new build of Windows 10 Mobile , whose number is 10549, for users registered in the fast ring of the Insider program.

Unfortunately, this release comes with a bug that prevents us from upgrading to it from the previous public build of Windows 10 Mobile. Instead, you need to go back to Windows Phone 8.1 using the Windows Devices Recovery Tool app, and then you can install build 10549 using the Windows Insider app.

News in build 10549

To be honest, this new build doesn't include many significant changes compared to the previous version, but there are still a couple of new features worth noting.

  • The first of these is support for racially diverse emojis, based on new standards proposed by the Unicode consortium. This feature was already available in the latest build of Windows 10 for PC, and with this update we can now use it on mobile as well. You just have to keep your finger pressed on an emoji that uses skin color, and then choose the color you want.

  • Cortana also incorporates new features, but only with respect to its regional coverage, by adding the option to use it in Australian and Canadian English.

  • The text box in the messaging app now grows as you type, so you can easily see all text (before its height was restricted to 2 or 3 lines). Microsoft promises that a future build will include the Skype messaging application, with support for voice calls and video conferencing.

  • The Lumia Camera app is no longer uninstalled when upgrading from Windows Phone 8.1, so Lumia 1020 users can now use this app from Windows 10 Mobile to take advantage of that phone's powerful camera features.

Issues Fixed

This is the list of issues that have been officially fixed by Microsoft in this build:

  • Windows Camera app no longer crashes when starting from other apps to take a picture.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the soft keyboard to hide when sending a message, making it difficult to send 2 or more text messages quickly.
  • Fixes an issue where dismissing a notification would cause the notifications icon to reappear at the top of the screen.
  • Until now, screenshots were not saved properly, which prevented messaging apps like WeChat, WhatsApp, LINE, WeiBo, and QQ from selecting such screenshots to send to others. This has been fixed in the latest build.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented opening applications installed on micro SD memory after reinserting the card.
  • The pinch-to-zoom gesture now works correctly in the maps app.
  • Fixes an issue that caused a black screen to be displayed for 10 seconds when trying to change the ringtone for calls or SMSs.
  • Alarms can now be used again in vibration only mode.
  • And call barring can be used again.

Known bugs in build 10549

  • It may be that after upgrading from Windows Phone 8.1 (there is no other way) some applications disappear. If we see this, we need to restore Windows on the computer.
  • After restarting the phone we may not see notifications (such as text messages or missed calls) until we unlock the phone for the first time. This issue will be fixed in a later build of Windows 10 Mobile.
  • After upgrading to this build it will be impossible for us to make voice calls on WhatsApp, Skype for Business, and similar applications. The solution for this is to simply uninstall these apps and download them again from the store.
