As previously announced, today Microsoft finally released the first preview of Windows 10 for mobile to users of the Windows Insider Fast Ringwhich is compatible with most Lumia devices running Windows Phone 8/8.1 (all except the 930, Icon and 640 XL, you can check the full list here).
And as expected, this build, 10051, includes important new features from the previous version. The most important of them for practical purposes is the partition stitching function, which allows you to dynamically adjust the space used on the disk and thus achieve the aforementioned compatibility with more phones Lumia. But there are also other changes that have more to do with usability and system functions, let's take a look at them.
Project Spartan
Another novelty in this preview is the inclusion of a preliminary version of Spartan, which allows us to test the new engine Edge rendering, and also use reading mode and reading view, all new features that are already present in the desktop version of the browser.
It is important to note that in this build Internet Explorer is still the default browser, so to use Spartan we will have to go to Find it in the list of all applications. We don't yet know if Microsoft plans for these 2 browsers to co-exist on mobile, in the same way as they will on desktop, or if this situation will change in future builds, leading to Spartan replacing IE Mobile entirely.
New mail and calendar apps
As previously leaked in screenshots and videos, Microsoft has integrated new versions of the calendar and mail mobile applications, which they share the same code as their desktop and tablet counterparts, and like them are named Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar
Unlike in the case of Spartan, these apps have completely replaced their predecessors, so in this build they are already the system's default tools to manage mail and calendar.
Among the new features included in Outlook Mail and Calendar is offering quick access to switch between them without having to go through the home screen. It also supports using swipe gestures to manage email, and includes Word-like features for composing email with rich formatting(support for tables, insert images, bulleted and numbered lists, etc).
Both applications provide support for Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail, Google Calendar, Yahoo!, IMAP, POP and other platform accounts.
New phone apps, messages and contacts
Here's another feature that was also leaked a few days ago. It is about updating the most basic and fundamental applications of all smartphones: phone, text messages and contactsAmong its innovations we find a renewed design that is more consistent with that of Windows 10 for PCs, and a new button within the messages application that allows you to quickly switch from a text conversation to a voice call.
As soon as we can test these new apps for ourselves we will be giving you more detailed information about the new features that Microsoft has integrated into them .
New Maps Application
Maps also makes the leap to the club of universal applications. Among its advantages is including all the functions already existing in the previous version, but accessible from a more intuitive and consistent interface with that of Windows 10 for PC.
Also introduced for the first time is voice navigation, based on data from both HERE and Bing Maps.
New App Changer
We already knew that Microsoft has been working on a new app changer for mobile, but it's a nice surprise to know that since this It is possible to use the same public build.
Improvements include extend to 15 the maximum number of recent applications that can be displayed, add support for displaying apps on landscape mode when applicable, and also to show up to 4 app thumbnails at the same time in the case of phones with large screens, such as the Lumia 1520 or Lumia 640 XL (unfortunately, it is not specified what exactly the thumbnail size will be). screen required to display this view).
Minor changes and bug fixes
The keyboard has been improved compared to the one in the previous build, including the buttons of semicolons and emojis on its first page The cost of this has been having to remove the language change button, although that function can still be accessed by holding down the &123 button , and we are also given the option to replace the emoji button with the old language change key.
Fixes have also been made to the appearance of Cortana, the interaction between the Photos app and other apps, and compatibility with the Microsoft Band.
There are probably more…
As we said above, this list includes only the news announced by Microsoft in its official note. It is very likely that build 10051 will include many other smaller changes, but equally useful and interesting for users.
In the next few hours we will be testing the build with our own hands to inform you of these other news, and if you discover any too You can send it to us through the contact form of the blog in order to share it with the rest of the users.
