Finally Microsoft would not invest in Cyanogen and its mods for Android
There was a stir at the time when the news that Microsoft could be ready to invest a large amount of money in Cyanogen Inc, a company that has been responsible for developing a modified version of Android, independent of Google, which is included in the famous OnePlus One phones.
However, according to sources close to Bloomberg, said investment agreement ultimately would not materialize, since Satya Nadella's company did not would be part of the round to raise $110 million in funding for Cyanogen.
Even so, Bloomberg sources say Microsoft would still be interested in a different kind of deal with Cyanogen. Specifically, Redmond wants the apps of its services (OneDrive, OneNote, Skype, etc) to come pre-installedin future versions of Android developed by Cyanogen.
Microsoft would still be in talks with Cyanogen so that applications like OneNote and OneDrive come pre-installed in Android mods "It was never clear what Microsoft&39;s intention would have been by investing in a developer of mods for Android. The most daring interpretations spoke of Nadella wanting to have a Redmond fork, and use it as Plan B in case they were unable to increase the market share of Windows Phone "
"If that was really Microsoft&39;s plan, the cancellation of this investment is good news for Windows Phone users, as it further commits the company to the future of Windows in the mobile market (using a game theory concept, by not being able to invest in Cyanogen, Microsoft is burning their boats, that is, they are losing alternative options and reaching a scenario where -almost- the only option for them is that Windows Phone succeed)."
Another explanation for Microsoft's interest in Cyanogen is that they were simply looking to incorporate their apps and services into Android mods If so , the failure of their attempts to invest does not prevent them from achieving that in any case, as indicated by the same Bloomberg sources, according to which Microsoft is already in talks to achieve this goal.
Anyway, in this story there is still nothing really confirmed, since neither of the 2 companies has given an official statement regarding the status of their negotiations (or even confirming that these negotiations exist). We will have to stay tuned as this story develops, since what comes out of here could be very relevant for the future of Microsoft in the mobile sector.
