Kantar: Windows Phone sales in the last quarter lose steam compared to last year
Table of contents:
One more month Kantar Wordlpanel has published its smartphone sales estimates for the last three months, and this time Windows Phone is not it comes out well at all. Microsoft's mobile system, which continued to show signs of growth last month, is now experiencing a slight setback in the vast majority of markets.
First of all it is necessary to remember, once again, that Kantar's figures are estimates based on its own market studies and refer to the sales of smartphones in three months prior to the date of publication. In this case, the numbers cover the period from the months of July to September of this year 2014
Slight but widespread drop in sales
In those three months Windows Phone has managed to gain 9, 2% of sales in the five main markets of the European Union(Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy and Spain). A figure that turns out to be slightly lower than last year, when it managed to get hold of 9.4% of sales. This same trend is repeated in four of the five countries.
In Spain Windows Phone continues to struggle to gain a foothold in the market. After managing to exceed iOS sales in our country in a quarter, the Microsoft system has not been able to maintain the effect and only manages to represent 3% of salesA number that represents the worst percentage of all European markets, where only Italy represents a balm for Windows Phone with a 15.2% share.
The situation looks even more complicated in other large markets such as the United States, China or Japan. Month after month we continue to see the decline in these countries where sales continue to represent very low percentages, 4.3% in the North American country, and even residuals, 0.4% and 0.9% in Asian countries.
Stealing iOS sales should be the priority
The numbers clash with the best sales figures for Lumia smartphones shared by Microsoft in its financial results, but are explained by higher growth in global smartphone sales. The problem for those from Redmond is that all these months that they spend behind their rivals in sales the more the difference in Windows Phone share increases
Android is unreachable for now, but iOS is not too far away in several countries, including Spain. The fight for that second place in sales in those territories should be a priority for those from Redmond. Only then could it wrest share from Apple's system and begin to change consumer perceptions of Windows Phone.
But to grab sales Microsoft needs to start taking these countries seriously The inability to access Cortana or advanced Bing features from Spain, France or Germany; markets where Windows Phone is closer to second than iOS; not a good tactic on the part of the Redmonds. Changing that is increasingly urgent.
