Windows Phone is already in one of every ten smartphones sold in the five main European markets
As usual, the first days of the month bring a review of the situation of the different technology markets. If during the weekend we saw how Windows 8 was doing among the desktop operating systems, today it's the turn of Windows Phone and its situation among the different systems that populate the mobile sector. Situation that every time seems to paint better.
According to the latest report published by Kantar WorldPanel ComTech, which summarizes data for the three months from July to September this year, Windows Phone sales already represent 9.8% of smartphone sales in the top five European markets taken together. This is an increase of more than double compared to the same period last year, and means that almost 1 in 10 smartphones sold in that territory is Windows Phone.
The figures are also positive if we consider each of these markets individually. In some of them, the growth in sales allows Windows Phone to get closer and closer to iOS, surpassing it as the second mobile operating system in Italy. In Spain, the market share, although it also grows compared to last year, remains at 3.7%; about 4.8% of iOS but very far from the overwhelming 90% that Android maintains in our country.
In the rest of the territories, Windows Phone has mixed luck. The Redmond system manages to grow by almost two points in the United States, but its market share remains below 5%, far from those of iOS and Android. The growth is also repeated in the Latin American countries considered by Kantar: Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, where the share rises to 5.8%; and in Australia, where it reaches 9.3%.It does not have the same luck in China, where it drops two share points compared to last year and remains only with 2.5%.
Once again, the report points to Nokia as the main responsible for the sustained growth of Windows Phone in the different territories. Kantar analysts also point to the Lumia 520 as a fundamental device as it became the phone of choice for users in many markets to enter the world of smartphones.
