The Xbox 360 numbers: 76 million consoles
Anyone would say that we have started Xbox week in Xataka Windows. If Microsoft's motives for creating its console or the incessant rumors about the next version weren't enough, the folks at Microsoft have taken advantage of these days to share the main numbers for Xbox 360 and its associated services. Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment business at Microsoft, has done it at the D: Dive Into Media conferences that the publication AllThingsD is carrying out between yesterday and today in California.
According to data revealed by Mehdi, Microsoft has sold 76 million Xbox 360 consoles since its exit in late 2005.For comparison, according to VGChartz figures, its predecessor sold 25 million from 2001 until it was finally withdrawn from the market seven years later. In the current generation, the 360 is in second place, behind the 98 million Wii shipped by Nintendo and ahead of the 72 million Playstation sold by Sony.
Next to almost a third of those Xboxes are already 24 million Kinects sold since its release in 2010. 4 million them during the past 2012. The commitment to its motion sensor continues to be decided, and all the rumors suggest that Microsoft will incorporate a new version of the device directly into the next Xbox, giving it a leading role from the beginning.
Regarding the services offered to enjoy on the console, Mehdi has given the figure of 46 million accounts on Xbox LIVE Figure which continues to grow, assuming an increase of 15% in the last year. The executive has not revealed how many of these accounts are paid, but he has given some data on their use. According to Microsoft numbers, Xbox LIVE Gold users use the console an average of 87 hours per month.
During 2012, service users enjoyed more than 18 billion hours of entertainment, with a significant 57% increase in non-gaming applications. Everything indicates that these latest numbers will continue to increase in the future given Microsoft's intentions to generate its own content, as has also been revealed by Nancy Tellem, president of Entertainment and Digital Media of the company, during the same conferences.
