Visual Studio Codespaces disappears in favor of GitHub Codespaces: Microsoft cancels its cloud development platform
Table of contents:
Microsoft's Visual Studio Codespaces tool has not lasted long. The American company has sent to limbo the legacy utility of Visual Studio Online that allowed users to create self-hosted development environments for free as well as create, thanks to Azure, fully hosted and managed paid development environments.
It was something that could already be foreseen when they announced the arrival of GitHub Codespaces, a tool almost identical to the previous one but which in this case opted for the GitHub platform to grow.Microsoft has thought that there is no point in maintaining Visual Studio Codespaces and GitHub Codespaces and has canceled the former.
Visual Studio Codespaces is GitHub Codespaces
In total, the life of Visual Studio Codespaces has lasted four months, at least under that name, because the possibilities offered by GitHub Codespaces are essentially the same , with the caveat that it is based on the GitHub platform.
Visual Studio Online, the web version of Microsoft's IDE, launched for all users at the end of 2019, in November to be exact.
Ten months since Microsoft released the public preview of Visual Studio Online, the web version of its popular Visual Studio IDE that allowed Any user with an Internet connection and a Microsoft account can try this cloud-based tool for free.It was the solution to create cloud-based developments accessible from anywhere, at zero cost, which only required a Microsoft account to log in.
GitHub Codespaces is now the legacy tool. Based on GitHub, it offers the same functions and causes it to stop supporting new users from November 2020 to stop providing service in February 2021.
Those currently using Visual Studio Codespaces should make the jump to GitHub Codespaces, but there is no automated migration for this. GitHub Codespaces is currently in free beta status and Microsoft has not yet released pricing plans for its new platform. The price list offered by Visual Studio Codespaces may serve as an indication of what can happen.
