Microsoft bets on TomTom to be the provider of the data in the Bing map system

At the beginning of February we learned how Microsoft chose TomTom to shape the Bing maps. It came in this way to replace the alliance that to date had formed with HERE Maps from Nokia, in what had been one of the most interesting bets we saw in your day.

In a market where competition is fierce and in which Google rules the roost but followed closely by applications such as Apple Maps or Waze , Microsoft could not be neglected if it wanted to continue offering alternatives that are of interest to users.And if at the time we saw how TomTom replaced HERE Maps in Microsoft services, now the American company announces that Bing Maps will use TomTom technology to obtain map data.

Commitment to TomTom cartography

In the agreement, Microsoft announces that it will use TomTom's mapping system to gain access to base maps for much of the world, with the exception of China, Japan, and South Korea. HERE Maps, the former service provider, is history

The company assures that this process does not require any intervention on the part of the clients and that as in other cases, the change of the data will be carried out automatically on the Bing Maps platform. All Bing Maps Platform APIs and services will remain available and continue to function as expected with this change>"

• For Windows 10 in version 1607 and earlier: Map services will not be available worldwide starting in October 2020
• For Windows 10 in version 1703 and earlier versions: Map services are not available on some devices sold in China

This is the latest step for Microsoft in its relationship with the Dutch company following the announcement in 2019 to create an expanded partnership with TomTom so that maps and traffic data from TomTom were accessible to Microsoft cloud services.

Microsoft Azure and Bing Maps are the major beneficiaries of an agreement so that as of today, the American company starts the data transition process for the Bing Maps Platform. The goal is that in the coming months, all Bing Maps Platform customers will be automatically migrated to TomTom mapping data.
