This patent shows how Microsoft could bet in the future on devices with a single screen that would be flexible

In the presentation that Microsoft carried out in October last year, we met two new devices such as the Surface Neo and the Surface Duo. They will not arrive until Christmas 2020 and when we met them it was striking that Microsoft will bet on a double screen with a hinge in the middle and not on a flexible screen, a concept which is fashionable in other brands.

The tablet-sized Surface Neo and smartphone-sized Surface Duo are conservative to many. But perhaps Microsoft already has plans to replace this technology with a single screen, already flexible, combined with the use of a hinge that would articulate the folding device.

Flexible screen and concealed hinge

The new patent that can be consulted at this link refers to a device with a Surface device with a single flexible screen that hides a hingethat allows its articulation.

For the development of this new device, Microsoft has added a system in the opening that hides what appears to be a spring that is in charge of facilitating the opening of the screen. The two parts of the apparatus will rotate in relation to the axis of the hinge and the spring gives it the shape that the user gives to the opening.

For now we don't know if Microsoft will end up betting on a unique flexible screen that will replace the technology that will arrive with the Surface Neo and the Surface Duo. Perhaps, they arrive motivated since the flexible screen technology is not yet mature and they are only an intermediate step. Microsoft could work in silence with flexible screens to bet on these at the right time and not have the problems that the Galaxy Fold has, for example. What's your opinion about it?
