Microsoft sees the future of communications in underwater data centers near population centers

Anonim

In June we talked about the new data center in which Microsoft has worked and which, submerged under the sea, sought to reduce energy consumption thanks to better cooling as it is under sea water. A job that responds to the name of Project Natick and whose latest model has 864 servers and 27.6 petabytes of storage inside.

It was June 2018, but this initiative had already begun in February 2016 with the aim of promoting services based on cloud data centers and offering them a fast response without lags and without cutsIt is one of the objectives that the American company is working on in the coming years.

Microsoft has seen a series of benefits in underwater servers, among which stands out the one that can offer lower energy consumption and lower latencyThe reason is basic, since they can be located closer to population centers than a server located on land, since almost 50% of the world population lives no more than 190 kilometers from the coast.

Microsoft started the process with a capsule server launched off the coast of California It was the first step that was followed by others, such as which involved the launch of another larger capsule off the Scottish coast, at the European Marine Energy Center in Orkney.

"

This is a practical solution as creating these encapsulated servers requires much less labor time than an established data center on land. The model used in Scotland took just 90 days to build and deploy, a much shorter time than traditional data centers. It is also a clean option, since they work with renewable energy (the Scottish model works with wind energy)."

This speed to build one of these centers also allows us to respond more efficiently to the needs of the market: wherever a data center, it can be deployed in much less time than a terrestrial data center.

It is therefore not surprising that at the Future Decoded conference, which the company has held in London, Satya Nadella affirms that underwater servers are an important part of the future of the company when creating new data centers that could even be used for commercial activities.
