During the Microsoft Research Faculty Summit, the Redmond company presented technology that would give Cortana the ability to recognize and understand images Project Adam is still being worked on and we don't expect it to come anytime soon, but at least we already have an idea of what it is about and the focus we want to give it.
During the presentation, Harry Shum, Vice President of Technology and Research, showed how Cortana was able to identify three dogs of different breeds through photographs Microsoft he wanted to give it a much more casual, everyday approach, like identifying an animal breed, but of course this has much (very) broader implications.
Project Adam, imitating the action of a brain
Under the premise that a brain achieves its effectiveness thanks to the millions of internal connections it has, Project Adam seeks to do more or less the same. More than 2 million Internet connections are made to process and store all kinds of photographs and information from social networks such as Flickr.
And all this is done thanks to an algorithm and procedure that greatly speeds up processing. According to the video, an infrastructure is needed 30 times less than current systems to be 50% more effective than these.
Today, Project Adam already has a database of 14 million images separated into 22,000 categories generated by users on Flickr and other social networks. And it plans, of course, to continue growing.
Where would this apply?
In the Project Adam presentation video, two examples are given: one is that of taking a picture of a meal to find out details such as calories and other nutritional data , someone who does bodybuilding will surely find this more than interesting.
Another example takes it more into the medical realm, where we might scan a wound on our body so Cortana can tell us what it isand some basic tips on how to proceed.
Of course the possibilities are endless, and the best thing is that this is much more user friendly There are still many people to talk to you a phone is uncomfortable, but taking a picture is something super normal and that is done daily.
However, for now we will have to keep waiting for further work to fine-tune the details, it is obvious that this will not arrive in a short time, but it is nice to see that the project is running and that, thanks to Satya Nadella's new approach, maybe it will get a new momentum.
