Microsoft breaks revenue record in the last quarter with 21 billion and 6 billion dollars in profit
Table of contents:
Microsoft yesterday presented financial results for the second quarter of its fiscal year, which covers the months of October through December. They include, therefore, the figures for the first weeks in the market for Windows 8, Surface and Windows Phone 8. And it does not seem to have done badly in economic terms, maintaining growth in a large part of its divisions.
In the quarter that ended on December 31st, Microsoft broke its revenue record, reaching the figure of 21.456 million dollars This represents an increase of about 3% compared to the same period of the previous year. The figure translates into 6,377 million dollars of net profit, which represents a slight increase compared to the figure of 6,624 million in 2011. However, the performance per share has not suffered the same fate, decreasing from 0.78 dollars to the current 0.76.
Windows 8, Surface and the results of their divisions
As expected when renewing the operating system, the Windows division has gained momentum. With 60 million Windows 8 licenses sold to date, they have reached $5.881 million in revenue, up 24% from Q2 last year . The result is an increase in operating profits of 400 million to 3,296. The results include figures carried over from previous quarters for pre-orders and pre-sales of Windows 8 and the upgrade offer.
The entertainment and devices division, which is responsible for the Surface, hasn't been so lucky. Although its benefits have increased to 596 million, income has been reduced by 11%, remaining at 3,772 million dollars. We know that Xbox is still in good he alth, topping the US month-over-month sales chart, but Microsoft isn't letting on the pace of sales of its Windows RT-based Surface tablet
The rest of the divisions and the near future
The Server & Tools division continues to be in enviable he alth, with more than $5 billion in revenue and operating profit of $2.121 billion. It is another of the divisions that is undergoing product renewal with the launch of SQL Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012. They will be joined in the coming days by the new version of Office
The other two divisions have had mixed fortunes. Although the business division continues with spectacular profits of 3,565 million, its income has fallen by 10% compared to the same period of the previous year. For its part, the online services division continues to make losses, but reduces them and increases its income by 11%. This is largely due to Bing and a 15% increase in search-related online revenue.
So far, Microsoft's fiscal year, which runs from July to June, seems to be going well. The summary of these first six months translates into 37,464 million dollars in revenue and 13,709 million dollars in operating profit There are two quarters left to complete the fiscal year , with new products to be launched on the market, such as Office, which is just around the corner, and many others that may be presented in the near future, such as that new Xbox, of which we do not stop hearing rumors.
