Some users get stuck in the Windows 11 Dev Channel and cannot move to the Beta Channel with Windows Update
Table of contents:
It was yesterday that we saw how Microsoft was alerting users who are part of the Windows Insider Program about how the builds could become more buggy since they start testing with the 22H2 branch. It was recommended to the most prudent, to move from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel, something that apparently not everyone can do
And it is that some users who notice that when trying to jump to the Beta Channel, less advanced and more conservative, they find that the option appears deactivated and not it You can select within Windows Update in the section dedicated to the Insider Program.
Stuck on Dev Channel
So far, Windows 11 and released builds are showing very stable behavior. This is because both the Dev Channel and the Beta Channel are based on the build that will generally be out in the fall to all users. From that point, the Beta Channel will focus on improvements coming to this version while the Dev Channel will be left to test what should be coming in Fall 2022.
At this point, many have seen it wise to lift their foot off the gas and move to the Beta Channel, which will have a more established foundation and more secure updates. To do this, they have entered the current route that goes to Settings, Windows Update and Windows Insider ProgramAt that point you can choose between Dev Channel, Beta Channel and Preview Channel (in the photo the latter is disabled since it does not appear in Windows 11)."
The problem is that some users can't make the jump to the Beta Channel by going down one step. This option appears but is greyed out, indicating that it is disabled in Windows Update Settings.
In HTNovo they propose the well-known trick to use the Registry Editor and thus change the channel, but apparently and according to MSPU they don't it works, because after leaving the Dev Channel those who have tried it end up in the Preview Channel.
The steps to try to downgrade to the Beta Channel using the Registry Editor">
In the first you must change the value of Dev in Beta to UIBranch while in the second you must make the same change but in the section BranchName.
"At that point all that remains is to commit the changes, close the Registry Editor>it seems that this trick doesn&39;t always work."
The problem, however, is not generic, as we have just verified it and in our equipment it is possible to switch from one channel to another without problemsA bug that for now has no solution and maybe we have to wait for a new build of Windows 11 for it to be fixed on the computers that are affected.
