One of the news items of 2017 and probably one of the most important of 2018 is the one referring to the existence of Meltdoww and Spectre, two vulnerabilities that seriously threaten security of millions of devices all over the world and we're not just talking about computers.
Almost any device, be it a computer, tablet, _smartphone_ that has an Intel, AMD or ARM processor inside, can be threatened by a failure in the design of the processors. The only solution is an update released by the different manufacturers that… well, we have already seen the controversies that it has raised. And it seems that it doesn't stop there, at least if we take into account the latest statement from Intel
Compliant with Murphy's Law
The fact is that the patch released to solve the problem seems to have not gone too well and in fact Intel communicates to Affected users who do not install the patch released by the equipment manufacturers, because as we have seen in the past, it causes unwanted and quite annoying reboots. In fact, on the laptop I have with Windows 10 I have not yet applied any solution in the form of a patch until the waters calm down, the remedy will not be worse than the disease.
The latest news is that Microsoft has released a Windows update that with the serial number KB4078130 seeks to fix the problems that the patch for Spectre variant 2 entailed(CVE 2017-5715).A solution that seeks to end the problems offered by Intel's patching.
This update seeks to address unexpected reboots and other abnormal system behavior that can lead to data loss or corruption. This Microsoft patch is designed to fix problems on computers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 in all versions.
In fact, at Microsoft they have even made a tutorial to end the problems that the previous patch could have caused by allowing it to be disabled by registry keys.
If you are using an affected device, this update can be applied by downloading it from the Microsoft Updates website. Applying this update specifically disables only the mitigation against CVE-2017-5715.
