Windows 10 is already installed on 120 million PCs
Having reached 110 million installs by October 6, Windows 10 would have added another 10 million over the last 3 weeks to reach being installed on 120 million PCs, according to data leaked by Redmond employees to the Winbeta blog.
How does this leave Windows 10 behind its goal of 1 billion installations? Good overall, but with some signs of concern. Considering the total number of installations so far, the adoption of Windows 10 is going at a good pace, if we consider that only 3 months have passed since its launch.
But if we look at the rate of monthly and daily installations, we see that this has been declining, and that if it were to continue At the current pace, Microsoft could not reach its goal of 1 billion Windows 10 devices by 2018, even if we add Xbox One consoles and phones that will upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile.
If Microsoft aspires to achieve this goal (something that is vital to repositioning Windows as an attractive ecosystem for developers), then Windows 10 should be gaining ground at a rhythm of 900,000 - 1,000,000 daily installations However, in recent months this growth has dropped to 667,000 daily updates.
This does not mean, by any means, that Windows 10 is failing or anything similar. Its level of adoption has been excellent, especially if we consider the recession in which the PC market finds itself. But so far that hasn't been enough to reach Microsoft's self-imposed goal, so Redmond needs to put their foot down on the accelerator instead of falling asleep on our laurels.
Some things that may help regain momentum in the coming months are the November update, which will fix many bugs that discourage users from installing Windows 10, and also the arrival of the holiday sales season of PCs, where computers should already come with Windows 10 pre-installed.
In addition, in the following years should be added the updates of corporate PCs, which always take a little longer to make the jump to the latest version of Windows.
(Note: the second chart is built under the assumption that by 2018 there will be an installed base of 50 million Xbox One consoles running Windows 10, and 100 million phones running Windows 10 Mobile, so that the installations of PCs and tablets would have to contribute the other 850 million.).
