New Icons
Table of contents:
As we mentioned a few moments ago, Microsoft has just launched a new build or compilation of Windows 10 for PCs within the program Windows Insider testing. In this other note we already detailed the instructions to download it, so now we have to review the news, error solutions, and known errors that come in this compilation 10565
Most of the new features in this build were already included in build 10558 that was leaked a few days ago. Among them, the one that stands out the most is the inclusion of the new modern Skype applications, which allow you to use messaging, voice and video calls in a completely integrated way with Windows 10, without having to resort to additional software.
A notable thing about these applications is that they offer interactive notifications, allowing us to reply to Skype messages directly from the notification center of Windows 10, without even having to open the messaging app (notifications are displayed thanks to a background process).
Tab previews in Microsoft Edge
Here's another feature that was leaked a few days ago, but it's no less useful for that. This is that hovering over tabs in Microsoft Edge now displays small thumbnail previews, where you can see the contents of each tab.
Sync bookmarks and reading list in Microsoft Edge
Finally! The version of Edge included in build 10565 already syncs bookmarks and reading lists between different devices. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not provide further details on how this synchronization works or what its limitations are.
Cortana now recognizes handwritten text, and integrates with Uber
Microsoft's digital assistant continues to receive major enhancements. Among them is that it is now able to recognize freehand text, and create reminders from the information contained in those notes.
In addition, Cortana will now be able to keep track of movies and events we plan to go to, through the confirmation emails we receive. In this way, we will be shown a reminder 2 hours before they start. Cortana will also display useful information about events, such as the time and address, and even let us request an Uber to get there, without having to open an app or Web page.
More intense colors in title bars
Adjustments have been made to the design of the title bars so that their colors are more intense. These colors can be customized and enabled/disabled in Settings > Personalization > Colors .
Better context menus on Startup
Improved live tile context menus, which now better explain the different sizes available, and group the rest of the options for more intuitive navigation.
New Icons
As we had anticipated thanks to a leaked build, Microsoft has updated many system icons that had not changed for too long, including the Windows Registry, which finally already has a look befitting the year 2015.
Improvements in system activation
Starting with this build, users will find it easier to activate Windows 10 through the free upgrade promotion. If we install build 10565 or later, and the system does not activate automatically, we will be allowed to enter the activation key of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 that we have used on that same device, and thus be able to activate the system without having to go back to a previous version of Windows and then install Windows 10 under the update mode (which is what had to be done until now).
Basically, this allows you to go from Windows 7/8/8.1 to Windows 10 by directly doing a clean installation, and keep the system activated by simply entering the original activation key of our PC later.
Improvements in printer management
Adds a new mode that makes the default printer always the last printer we use (that is, if printer A is the default printer, and one day we use printer B, then printer B will be the new default printer). This modality is activated by default, but we can change it by going to Configuration > Devices > Printers and scanners .
Troubleshooting
Microsoft reports that the following issues have been resolved since the previous build 10525.
- Before, a warning message was displayed in Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update indicating that we had changed Windows Insider rings, even though this had not been the case. Now the message will appear only if we are effectively changing the Insider ring.
- Modern apps can again play audio when minimized.
- An issue has been fixed that caused clicking on system icons on the taskbar to block the display of pop-up boxes with information about these icons (for example, the box to choose a Wi-Fi network, the battery information box, etc).
- Many contextual menus now adapt their size depending on whether they are used with a mouse or a touch screen.
- The Contacts app now lets you pin people to the Start screen.
- Fixes an issue that caused several pinned apps to appear twice on the taskbar.
- The option to hide desktop icons via the context menu works again.
- Store apps have been automatically updated again.
Known Bugs
- The search box does not work if Cortana is not activated. This can be fixed by downloading and installing any language pack.
- The Xbox application will consume several GB of RAM if we have added games that are not from the Windows Store (eg, Portal, Age of Empires, etc). This memory is released when you close the application,
- Support for WebM and VP9 in Edge has been temporarily removed, but will be back in future builds.
- Small 8-inch tablets may experience a blue screen when upgrading to the new build, thus reverting to the previous build (10525).
