Cortana in Spanish

A few hours ago the long-awaited new version of Windows 10 was released for Insider program users. This build, which has the number 10041, contains a significant number of new features compared to the previous public release (build 9926, released in January), although most of them were already present in build 10036, which was leaked a few days ago.

If we are already in the Insider program, and we have build 9926 installed, we can update to this new version using Windows Update following the instructions in the last paragraph of this post. But whether we install this new version or not, we probably want to know what improvements and new features it includes, so without further ado let's take a closer look at them.

Spartan is not included yet

We know, this is not new to the build, but it is worth mentioning since many users were expecting to find the new version of Microsoft's browser(which will replace Internet Explorer) in the next public release to be released. Well, that was not the case.

"

However, it is possible to adjust Internet Explorer options to test Spartan&39;s experimental rendering engine (which comes with some new features compared to previous builds). Just type about:flags in the address bar, press Enter, and then check the Enable Experimental Web Platform Features> box."

According to Microsoft, we will have to wait until the next build to test the rest of Spartan's goodness, so be patient.

Menu/Home Screen Improvements

"

As expected, the new Start menu can be used with transparent background. In addition, usability on tablets has been improved by making the button of all applications>"

Task View and multiple desktops

"

Another change that was already leaked: with the new build it is allowed to move windows from one desktop to another by drag and drop. You can even drag a window to the +> button"

In addition, it is now possible to configure the taskbar (and the ALT + TAB window switcher) to show(s) only the current desktop windows , and not those on all desktops, as was the case before.

"

Microsoft tells us they plan to use Insiders as guinea pigs>"

Cortana in Spanish

This is something I didn't see coming. In build 10041 Cortana for Windows expands its availability to new countries, including Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany. To activate the use in Spanish, it should be enough to change our regional location to Spain.

New interface to connect to networks

"

Improved the dialog that appears when you press the network connection button on the taskbar. In the new interface of this box, the Windows 8 style is abandoned, which was no longer consistent with the rest of the system due to the removal of the charms."

Photos app improvements

Many changes have been made to the Photos app. One of them is that its live tile now shows recent images coming from OneDrive, too, and not just from the local drive, as was the case before. There are also performance and stability improvements.

Something that many will appreciate is that support for RAW files coming from most cameras on the market. Some keyboard shortcuts (TAB, up and down keys, and PageUp/PageDown) are also added, with more to come soon.

New handwriting interface

The Handwriting panel now has a revamped design, and activates automatically when selecting a text field using a stylus or digital pen, always appearing near the text field, for our convenience. Also offers predictive suggestions of words.

Insider Hub and Lock Screen

"

As we&39;ve already seen in build 10036, Microsoft is improving the Insider Hub by adding statistics about how we use Windows 10 , but also improving feedback search Specifically, filtering between suggestions vs. problems, and the search results show the Me too button, so we can provide upvotes without leaving that results page."

In addition, the lock screen is beginning to be used to show help and tips related to the use of the operating system. This is intended to improve the learning curve of those who use Windows 10 for the first time.

Problems that are resolved, and problems that persist

Like every release of Windows 10, build 10041 resolves a large number of issues existing in the previous release. Some of the most notable are the delay in displaying the start menu, the inability to use the search box when the taskbar was located at the top of the screen, and the display of a dual-boot screen when turning on the PC, even if Windows 10 was the only operating system installed.

But as is also expected from an operating system still in development, there are still multiple bugs to be resolved, some of which are known already by the same Microsoft:

  • "The login screen may not allow us to type our username or password. To solve this we have to restart the computer, or use the command Change user>"

  • If we lock the computer (WIN + L) when the wizard is running to configure Windows for the first time we will not be able to unlock it again and we will have to restart the equipment and the assistant from scratch. Solution: Do not lock the computer while the wizard is running.

  • There are issues with accessibility features: narrator, third-party screen readers, and magnifying glass.

  • There are problems installing apps from the Windows Store Beta, due to license failures. That same generates it is impossible to use the Mail, Calendar and Contacts applications To solve the latter it is necessary to open PowerShell in administrator mode, and then execute the following command:

Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “windowscommunicationsapps”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online

And later reinstall the applications from the classic Windows Store (the one with a green live tile).

  • The lock screen on devices with high pixel density may display very large fonts.

  • Tablet mode notifications are disabled by default due to other issues, but can be manually enabled from settings.

  • Some people may see dialog boxes asking to install updates or restart the computer, even though there are no installations to install and no restarts pending. These dialogs can be safely ignored.

There are more news (but also more bugs)

As we use build 10041 we will find more unresolved problems, apart from those already mentioned, since one of the objectives of these previews is precisely so that users can detect and give notice of the existence of such bugs.

The positive side is that there are probably more news that have not been announced by Microsoft in its official note. Initially, all of the improvements from build 10036 that we've already talked about here should be present, but there may be a handful of additional changes. Over the next few days we will be commenting on such improvements.
