The next versions of Windows could arrive in spring 2015
In Redmond they won't have a day of respite. Windows 8.1 has just come out but there are already those who are beginning to wonder what will come after the first major update to Windows 8. One of them is Mary Jo Foley who is once again using her sources to try to find out some information about Microsoft's future plans for its operating system
As posted by the usually knowledgeable ZDNet journalist it looks like the date for the next big changes to Windows 8 will be spring 2014. That's when version 8 is scheduled to be released in those months .1 for Windows Phone, and along with it could also come a new major update to Windows 8.1.
This would not be a new version of Windows. For that we might have to wait until the fall of next year, just two years after Windows 8 and one after Windows 8.1. Or that at least was suggested by some rumors that now seem less likely judging by the information provided to Mary Jo Foley by some of her most reliable sources.
Right now the plan seems to be to have a new version of Windows ready in Spring 2015, although these dates could change by then. The new version would be a kind of hybrid that would try to bring Windows and Windows Phone closer. At that time, the unified application store for the two systems would also be launched, to which developers could upload their creations before it is publicly accessible.
The possibility of unifying the different operating systems could begin, as expected, by merging Windows Phone and Windows RT, the two systems for the company's ARM platforms. A moment that could arrive in the same spring of 2015. But things may not stop there, since it seems that the operating systems team led by Terry Myerson is reorganizing its priorities and working methods in everything related to Windows, Windows Phone and the operating system that Xbox incorporates.
For now all this is nothing more than rumours, some more probable than others, which should be taken with the usual caution. What does seem is that the coming springs will become the favorite dates for those from Redmond to publish important news for their operating systems.
