Windows 8 continues to gain presence and already represents the 1
Just launched 2013, one wonders: where does Windows 8 start the new year? One way to check this is to consult the latest operating system market figures published by Net Applications. They collect data from around 40,000 websites that accumulate close to 160 million unique visitors per month.
According to the latest reports, which correspond to the month of December, Windows 8 represents 1.72% of the market of operating systems desktop, where the other versions of Windows are still the clear dominant with more than 90%.With that percentage, which represents an increase of 0.63% compared to November, Microsoft's new system has already surpassed Linux and is less than half a point behind the most recent versions of Mac OS X. The RT version of the system is still residual with just 0.01%.
Windows 8 numbers continue the growing trend in OS adoption, but how fast is it? Well, Windows 7 also hit the market at the end of a month of October, specifically in 2009, and Net Applications keeps the data from then, so we have a good opportunity to compare both releases and their evolution over the months.
The chart indicates a faster starting point and growth for Windows 7, but there are multiple reasons for this. Of course, the current market situation is very different from three years ago, with the PC being attacked on several fronts and many wanting to bury it.To this we must add numerous variables such as the version of the system that preceded each one, the offer of the manufacturers, the response of the consumers, etc; none of which should be overlooked.
That is, the figures must be compared without losing sight of their context. Looking at the data for Windows 7 can help us establish a comparative framework for sales of Windows 8, but they won't explain the success or failure of the new operating system. Now, with so many opinions about whether it is doing well, badly or regular, one prefers to look at the numbers and try to see what is really happening.
There is one year left to fill the graph and form our own opinion on the subject, but it is curious to see how Microsoft's main rival is Microsoft itself. In just three months Windows 8 has already outperformed many of its rivals, and it will probably finish doing so the next time we look at the numbers again. After all, it seems that the real competition for Windows 8 is the previous versions of Windows.
