Microsoft has plans with Windows Terminal: it will open by default in Windows 11 as a command line

We have talked about Windows Terminal on other occasions. Microsoft is rolling out various enhancements to its tool and now the goal is to make Terminal the default command line app in Windows 11, above the command prompt system and PowerShell.

This is a move that is not surprising given the company's latest moves in this regard and which has been announced on one of Microsoft's blogs. The change must be specified with the different updates that should arrive from Windows 11 throughout 2022.

Windows Terminal to Rule Them All

Windows Terminal will become the default command-line experience in Windows 11. Until now, shells such as Command Prompt and PowerShell have always opened within the Windows console host.

For the immediate future Microsoft wants Terminal to start by default when opening a command line application. Until recently they have not been able to easily replace the console host. Now the company is reaching out to allow other terminals to be set as default, including the Windows Terminal.

In Windows 11 Windows Terminal can be set as default from different points, either from the developer settings page of the Windows Settings, within the Windows Terminal settings on the start page or within the host properties sheet of the Windows console.

This movement around Windows Terminal shows that the command console continues to be an essential support for many system administrators, technicians and especially developers.

The evolution of Windows Terminal has been relentless in recent years. You can check it out on the Windows Command Line blog at Microsoft or on the project page on GitHub. First came the announcement in May 2019 of a limited preview version, which in June 2019 offered its first public release.
