Microsoft will bring to Edge improvements in the use of PDF's such as the one that tells us where we have left a reading
Table of contents:
Microsoft continues to work on features to bring to its brand new Chromium-based browser and now updates the roadmap again with new features coming to Edge. Improvements that will come as the location of a reading point that we have interrupted
Improvements that affect the PDF reader integrated into your Edge browser and that again gains functions, improvements that will arrive both for the Windows version and for those that we can download and use for macOS and Linux.
Where we left a reading
Reading and navigation improvements are coming to the list, in the annotation tools and functions that are already available as others that are still being worked on .
- The Table of Contents allows you to view the contents of PDF files and navigate to different parts seamlessly, improving productivity.
- Page view allows you to view the PDF file in book format, with the option to view the cover separately.
- Caret mode allows you to navigate through your PDF files and select text directly via the keyboard by enabling Caret mode by pressing F7.
- Accessibility support includes keyboard accessibility, screen reader support, and the ability to view PDF files in high contrast mode.
- You can fill out basic PDF forms directly in your browser.
- Ability to choose ink color and width for underlining in PDF files.
- Text notes can be quickly added to the text in the file to jot down ideas for later reference.
- The Highlight mode to draw attention to the most interesting parts of the PDF.
- Read aloud now supports PDF documents.
- Dictionary and search via context menu help you better understand content and research, while keeping it in context.
- You can open PDF files protected with Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) and Information Rights Management (IRM) and view permissions without issue within Microsoft Edge, without the need for plugins.
- Certificate-based digital signatures, currently in preview, allow you to view and validate digital signatures present in PDF documents directly in your browser.
These are the functions that can already be tested, but they are also working on others, including the ability to recover the reading where we left it at a given moment, interesting especially if it deals with long texts.
- View Recovery: When reopening a PDF file, you can easily access the location of the last reading.
- Viewing protected MIP files from other users of our company.
- Validate certificate-based digital signatures. They are working to add support for signatures with long-term validity.
- Preview PDF files in File Explorer and Outlook.
- Support for adding text boxes to fill in online forms
- View Protected File Labels
- Digital signatures with ETSI signature validation and the ability to add digital signatures
- Accessibility improvements: Advanced ability to fill out forms and navigate a PDF document using screen readers.
For now Microsoft has not detailed when the new features will arrive that they are working on, but hopefully before reaching the general channel go through the test versions in the Canary, Dev and Beta channels.
