These are the necessary steps to be able to use both Chromium-based Edge and the Legacy version on a PC
Table of contents:
There is less and less time left so that from January 15 we can get hold of the Microsoft browser. The new Edge based on Chromium will be a reality for Windows 10, Windows 7 and macOS in a process for which we have already seen both the installation method and the ways to avoid it.
And now we know that it can be used simultaneously both the new Edge that will arrive in a few days and the version that until now we have met. Both browsers can be run at the same time by making changes to Group Policy.
Two versions of Edge at the same time
Microsoft has made this possibility public through the support document where it states that concurrent use is possible just by modifying group policy settings. A possibility that, you should take into account, is only available in the Professional and Enterprise editions of Windows 10 and not in the Home edition.
Image from The Windows ClubTo be able to use both versions, from the support page they have prepared a guide with a series of steps that we must follow:
- "In the Windows search bar we access the Configuration Panel."
- "We enter the Configuration of the equipment> Update of Microsoft Edge > Applications." "
- Within Applications, select Allow the Microsoft Edge Side by Side browser experience>"
- "Select Enabled and then click OK."
It is one of the methods to allow you to modify group policy and perhaps the easiest. The other way is to enter the System Registry and create a new key called EdgeUpdate in the path Computer\HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft"
Right click on the Microsoft folder and create a new key with the name EdgeUpdate Select the folder EdgeUpdate and click with the right mouse button on the left side of the panel creating a 32-bit DWORD command with the name Allowsxs Double click to edit it and give it the value 1"
Microsoft recommends that this system be implemented when installing the new Chromium-based Edge as this way, all references to the old Edge remain intact. This is an interesting system for companies that want to test the advantages of the new version of Edge and that nevertheless want to continue maintaining the security that it offers them in their day to date the version of Edge they have been using.
