Microsoft again in the eye of the hurricane: Windows Defender is leaving some computers blocked
It seems that not even in the almost recently launched 2019 at Microsoft are they going to get rid of the problems. And this time it's not about Windows 10, because the source of the problems lies in Windows Defender, the application that in theory is designed to protect our computers.
And we say in theory, since apparently with the last update the opposite is happening. After updating to the latest version available, Windows Defender is causing some computers to fail to turn onA serious problem that Microsoft is already aware of.
In fact, Microsoft and even INCIBE (National Cybersecurity Institute) are already aware of it. This is a problem that is quite widespread, since it does not discriminate between the different versions of Windows. The three most popular versions of Windows 10 are thus affected, that is, the problems with this update affect all versions of Windows 10 Enterprise, Pro and Home and also Windows Server 2016
Microsoft, as we say, is aware of the bug that apparently had its origin in the Secure Boot function of the BIOS After installing Windows Defender version 4.18.1901.7, a path change occurs and that may be the source of the problem. So they recommend avoiding the update for now until the bug is fixed.
If we are already experiencing the failure and our equipment does not respond, from the Microsoft support page they have detailed some steps to bring the equipment back to life :
- Reboot the computer and enter BIOS.
- In the BIOS, disable Secure Boot.
- We save the changes made and reboot the PC "
- Open the command window and enter this code _%programdata%MicrosoftWindows DefenderPlatform4.18.1901-7MpCmdRun.exe -revertplatform4_ "
- Write the following commands: _sc query windefend_ to check that Windows Defender is working and _sc qc windefend_ to check that the version of Windows Defender is no longer the 4.18.1901.75.
- Reboot the computer, enter the BIOS and enable Secure Boot again.
In addition, INCIBE assures that this update could generate problems due to a change in the location of the update file path. This means that some downloads could be blocked if we have AppLocker enabled."
