You can now manage HEIF images in Windows 10 thanks to the HEIF Image Extensions application

One of the most interesting developments we saw at WWDC17 in 2017 was HEIF, the new image container introduced by Apple that was intended to do away with the JPEG format for images on iPhone and iPad. It was intended to be the new standard format in iOS starting with iOS 11.
And after its passage and consolidation in the Apple ecosystem, now comes to Windows the possibility of working with HEIF images, an image format that optimizes the size of the files so that computers that are short on storage capacity can have more available space.
HEIF helps you with these improvements
Before continuing, clarify that HEIF is not an image format as such, but rather an image container. In this way, while with HEIF we can store a sequence of images, JPEG allows us to name a single image, since it is indeed an image format.
On the other hand, HEIF allows lossless image editing and that in addition, changes are fully reversible. Thus, if when editing in PNG or JPEG the changes are forever, with HEIF this is not the case.
And above all, the difference is in the size. So an image in HEIF generally occupies half the size of the same image in JPEGv, in addition to storing more information. The same number of image files can take up much less space on your computer and free up several GB of storage.
And to offer support for images of this type now the HEIF Image Extensions application is coming to the Microsoft Store with which we can take advantage of this image container to use it with the Photos application, at least if we are on version 2018.18022.13740.
It is an application available for PC, Mobile, HoloLens and Xbox One that also requires that we install the HEVC Video Extensions pack. In this way, if we have the latter installed, we can process HEIF images in Windows 10 and in the same way play videos with the HEVC format in any application.
