Windows Live Writer will soon become open source

Along with the arrival of Windows 7, back in 2009, Microsoft released a pack of utilities, known as Windows Live Essentials , designed to replace and enhance some basic functions of the operating system, such as mail, calendar and video editing, and at the same time avoid problems with antitrust authorities, because these tools were offered as free downloads, rather than being integrated with the operating system.

For this reason, and given that Windows Live Writer did not seem to have much of a future within a Microsoft with other priorities, the company has decided to release the application as open source , so that the developer community can improve it and provide community support to users.

For now it is not known when this announcement will take place. Scott Hanselman himself, a Microsoft official who confirmed the information on Twitter, asks us to be patient until Redmond refines the details of the measure.

What is clear is that this is excellent news for all the bloggers who make use of this tool, and also for those that do not, since with the release of its code it is possible that Windows Live Writer adds support for more content management platforms, and even reaches other platforms such as Linux or OS X ( although of course, the latter will depend on whether someone is interested in it).
