HERE Maps is updated on Windows Phone and Windows 8 asking us to migrate to "HERE Accounts"
Table of contents:
Just like Microsoft has been trying to tidy up the house after the purchase by Nokia, using closing or merging duplicate services and adopting the Lumia brand, at Nokia are looking to do the same. One step in that direction has been the update of the HERE apps (Maps, Drive, Transit, and City Lens), dropping support for Microsoft/ Nokia to make way for new HERE accounts."
With these accounts we get the same places and collections synchronization functionalities that we previously enjoyed with Nokia/Microsoft accounts, but since it is a different account, we will have to migrate our data in case we want to keep the previously saved collections.
To achieve that, the same application offers the option to import the data from the old account when logging in with a HERE account for first time. This process may take a few minutes, but it is done in the background, so we can continue using the applications in the meantime and an email will be sent to us to notify us when the migration is complete.
If we want, we can also skip the data migration for this time, and carry it out later, either within the application itself, or on the Here.com website. It's still important to migrate soon, as Nokia accounts will soon stop working.
Navigation maps in more countries and other improvements
Along with the above change, HERE also announces that it is expanding its Drive+ service to 18 new countries and territories: Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Cyprus, Iraq, Libya, Mauritania, Mauritius, Nepal, Paraguay, Saint Helena, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Zambia and Zimbabwe.Even if we do not live in any of these countries, this improvement can be useful in case we are traveling and need to obtain routes in any of those places.
Finally, the updates include the ever-present bug fixes, performance and stability improvements, and also add the ability to use HERE Drive+ and HERE Transit for free on all Windows Phone 8 smartphones, including non-Lumia
