The figures of the Windows and Windows Phone stores show the progress of their new versions
Table of contents:
Earlier this week, hidden by Windows 10, Microsoft released a new report with the numbers and trends of its app stores In it they review categories, languages and sales in the Windows Store and the Windows Phone Store, revealing interesting data about the applications, but also about their operating systems and the adoption of their different versions.
In this section, the level of penetration of Windows 8.1 is remarkable, judging by application downloads. According to data provided by Microsoft, the vast majority of applications, more than 70%, were downloaded for the latest version of the desktop system, while those still with Windows 8 installed they downloaded less than the remaining 30%.
In Windows Phone things are a little more close. Although the latest version, Windows Phone 8.1, already accounts for more than half of downloads; its predecessor is still the destination for almost 40% of downloaded applications, leaving the 7.x branch with a meager 5%.
Downloads by countries and languages
In terms of downloads and purchases by country, The United States and emerging countries continue to be the main markets for applications of both stores. The first continues in a prominent position, its advantage over other countries being greater in the Windows Store. In it, the United States monopolizes 21% of the downloads compared to 6% of the second classified: China. In Windows Phone, the leading positions are repeated, but the North American country only represents 12% while the Asian country remains with 9%.
If we look at the distribution in terms of languages, things are somewhat more divided. In this case, applications in English are the most downloaded in both stores, followed by the other category and those in Spanish. This is interesting because, as Microsoft reminds us, offering an application only in English implies reaching barely 25% of the market, increasing the number to 75% if We add other languages such as Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian or German.
Games and in-app purchases are triumphant
The distribution by categories continues to have the clear dominator in the Games in both systems. In the Windows Store the difference with respect to the second, Music and Videos, is considerable, being somewhat less in Windows Phone. Among the categories with the most pull in both, Social applications, Entertainment, Productivity and Tools or Photos are also repeated.
But the breakthrough in this latest report is represented by in-app purchases According to Microsoft, this method of app monetization has been the one that has had the most growth margin in the two stores. In August, the top 20 applications that grew the most used this method and, as can be seen in the graph above, this is already the most used by developers of the Windows Phone Store, compared to direct sales or .
