Bing Translator

This week Microsoft has released the official translation application for Windows 8 With it, they further complete the offer of Bing services available on its operating system and bring instant translation a little closer to our hands. From simple phrases, to character recognition with the camera and its automatic translation, going through a complete integration in the system, the application can end up becoming one of the essential ones in Windows 8.

Bing Translator includes support for more than 40 languages that can be consulted over the Internet.It also has the possibility of downloading some language packs allowing translations when we do not have a network connection. The latter will be very helpful when we are away from home or traveling.

With the application we can easily translate short sentences almost instantly and listen to their pronunciation directly thanks to the included voices. Based on the tests we have been able to carry out, the translation works as reasonably well as could be expected, saving the typical inconsistencies of this type of automatic translators.

Augmented reality

With Windows 8 embedded in tablets equipped with cameras, a small dose of augmented reality could not be missing in this translation application.Bing Translator makes use of the camera and character recognition to superimpose the translation over the text we are focusing on in real time.

When we obtain the translation that we consider appropriate, a simple click will suffice to save the image and add it to our history. The translations are kept in the list until we delete them with the button located in the right corner of the bottom bar.

Integration in the system

As expected in an official Microsoft application, Bing Translator is fully integrated into the system From any other Modern UI application we can select text and access the share option in the Charms bar where we can select the application to translate it directly.

After testing it for a few days, the application has proven to be solvent in the most common situations. There are still some flaws to be ironed out in translations or when getting text from images or websites, but hopefully the app and service will improve with time.
