Tube Save
Table of contents:
Today I want to introduce you to a free application with Modern UI interface, Tube Save, whose purpose is to download YouTube video and audio Methods and programs to perform this task there are many, including plugins written for various browsers, however, Tube Save takes advantage of the native Windows 8 interface very well for this purpose, adding features extra that we will see later.
I don't know if it's because the existing Modern UI apps in the Windows 8 app store belong to a first batch that has to evolve, or because the minimalism of the interface is infecting developers, but Every day more applications specialized in a very specific task are seen in the store, which perform well without going beyond. This is the case with Tube Save.
Tube Save Interface
As I anticipated, Tube Save allows you to download YouTube videos in any resolution that is available on the portal Also download only theaudio from any video, which will save directly in MP3 format, regardless of how it is encoded in the source. The program incorporates a simple download manager and the ability to tag downloaded audio.
Once the app is downloaded from the store, we will have an icon on the home screen to run Tube Save. When opening the program we will see a screen with graphite background and white letters, where we will find the following elements:
- Horizontal menu drop-down menu, located under the application title.
- Search tool, symbolized by a control represented by a magnifying glass.
- Download control (Downloads).
- Matrix of three rows representative of the videos with their title, existing in the category that we find, which by default will be ? recent highlights ?.
- The free application has the cost of advertising inserts, although for the moment the application is quite discreet and does not bother you.
The horizontal menu contains an extensive list of categories where the different contents are classified hosted on the YouTube portal. Every time we select a category from the menu, the content of the representative matrix of the works will change, with a small delay. If I have not forgotten to write down any, they are these:
- Videos: Recently featured
- Videos: Most popular this week
- Videos: Most all time
- Videos: Trending
- Videos: Most discussed this week
- Videos: Most discussed all time
- Videos: Top rated this week
- Videos: Top rated all time
- Music: Popular today
- Autos & Vehicles
- Music
- Entertainment
- Film & Animation
- Animals
- Sports
- Comedy
- Gaming
- Howto & Style
- onprofits & Activism
- People & Blogs
- Science & Technology
- Travel & Events
Regarding the search control, what it really does is display the sidebar (Charm bar), so that Tube Save is selected as the filter for them. The search is carried out regardless of the category we have on the screen When the application locates content related to the search criteria, it automatically jumps to the specific category where it is found .
The “Downloads” button gives access to a screen where downloads are managed and saved This same screen is also accessible by clicking with the right mouse button on any free area of the screen, which will then show, in the lower right part, the "Downloads" button.
Finally, the three-row matrix containing the representative icons and names of the works, can show up to 40 elements.
Working with Tube Save
As soon as we click on the representative icon of any video, the program takes us to another screen where we will choose the download method This This is the case both for the videos offered by the program within each category, and for those that appear as a result of a search.
In the upper left part of the new screen, with good size font, will be displayed information related to the video, mainly the title and sometimes the format. This doesn't seem to depend on Tube Save, but on how the work has been tagged on YouTube
In the upper right area we will find the author (and sometimes the number of reproductions), in a rather small font. There are also two controls: Details (details) and Comments (comments).
The main element of the screen is the reproduction zone of the work, with it we can reproduce the content without downloading it. In the lower zone we will have the controls that enable the download that for the video, there will be as many as resolutions are available For the audio, a single control with the label MP3.
If we press the Details button, a right side band will be displayed with additional information about the video Comments will have a similar behavior, only that it will offer all the comments that the work has, enabling a slider if they exceed the vertical size of the screen.
As soon as we click on one of the available resolutions or the MP3 control, we will jump to another screen where the downloads already made and the active ones are reflected . Those that are in the process of downloading will show a progress bar in purple.
Downloads can be canceled by right-clicking the mouse on a clean area of the screen. With this action, the download cancellation control will be displayed in a lower band, located in the lower right corner of the screen.
On the download control screen, when clicking on any of them (video or MP3), the Windows Media player is triggered in a pop-up window. The number of downloads is unlimited and simultaneous, as can be seen in the screenshot. Downloading takes place in the background, and if the app stops, downloads will resume.
Additional functions
When we download music in MP3 format, by clicking with the right mouse button on the representative icon, two buttons will appear in the lower right area: Delete and Edit Info . With the second, a side band is displayed in the right area where we can include title, artist and album name
Tube Save, conclusions
In general, Tube Save correctly fulfills its mission. The application is agile, pleasant to work with and easy to use. Free Tube Save is another point in its favor.
Tube Save is only available in EnglishAs details that could be improved, I would point to a better placement of the Details and Comments controls, located excessively at the edge of the screen. On the other hand, it does not seem logical that, having its own player, it uses the system's one to view or listen to what has been downloaded. This aspect is not well resolved.
Another point to polish is the fact that sometimes it shows certain types of information and other times it doesn't (the number of downloads, for example). I have also verified that it omits video resolutions that are available in some cases. Finally, the information edited in MP3 files ( title, artist and album name) is not always saved.
"These drawbacks are not decisive for concluding that the application is mediocre. All reported issues may be polished in future releases."
