The eight essential applications for Windows 8

Table of contents:

Anonim

I imagine that there will be few of you who have not already installed Windows 8 on your computer, and I can imagine the first question: What applications should I install? Despite having been released to the public not long ago, Windows already has a good number of applications, and many of them are really interesting. We are going to review the eight applications that we believe cannot be missing from your computer.

Tweetro, the best Twitter client (so far)

We start with what you'll all be looking for: a Twitter client.Oddly enough, there aren't that many Twitter clients in the Windows Store right now, and I like Tweetro the most. The design is spectacular, although perhaps I miss that it is more focused on intensive users, with more columns and more tweets in view.

Tweetro supports multiple accounts, has push notifications and is free. It also has support for the Twitter Streaming API, so you'll receive tweets instantly on your computer. There are no Twitter client features that I missed, except perhaps what I mentioned earlier, too light for my liking.

Metro Commander, Metro-style file explorer

Surprisingly, in Windows 8 there is no file explorer for Metro/Modern UI itself. Yes, we can choose files from applications, but we can't manage our folders in a program other than the traditional Windows Explorer.

Luckily, there are always people willing to make up for these small defects. Metro Commander is precisely that: a Metro-style file explorer. The interface is very simple: two columns with two independent folders through which we can navigate and copy things between them. It's really comfortable, especially if you don't want to leave the Metro.

From Metro Commander we can open any file, and even adjust our desktop background to be more comfortable. The only flaw I find is that to go back or up we have to go to the context menu: it would be much better to have quick access or next to the route. Otherwise, highly recommended.

TuneIn, all the radio just a click away

I have the TuneIn app on Windows Phone, and was quite happy when I saw that it was also available on Windows 8.In case you don't know it, TuneIn is a web service that allows us to listen to all the Internet radio we want. The selection is incredibly large and well organized.

"

The application works perfectly, it is easy to use and also very well designed. Browsing the categories is easy, and the Now Playing> screen"

"I had some problems with the application (it wouldn&39;t let me log in with my account), and the translation has the odd mistake (it was hard for me to guess why the hell they put Alma> "

Evernote, your notes always at hand

I'm a true fan of Evernote, I've had it since it came out on Windows Phone and I use it quite a bit. The Windows 8 application is not far behind its little cousin. The design is very well worked, and it works very smoothly and without errors.

As always, we can synchronize all our notes, access notebooks and create new notes, text or image. The downside is that we cannot use formatted text, nor join images with text in the same note. Let's hope Evernote fixes these little bugs soon.

OneNote, the only Office application with a Metro version

In case you don't like or don't use Evernote, here is another application that you should also install on your Windows 8 computer. It is OneNote, and the only one from the Office suite that Microsoft has adapted to the interface Meter.

It has all the features of the desktop version, and we can include photos, lists and tables without any problem. It's quite worth it: it's fast, smooth, and you'll probably find it very useful, even more so considering that it syncs automatically via SkyDrive.

IM+, instant messaging with a multitude of services

"

We continue with more legacy applications>"

With IM+ you will be able to chat with your contacts from Facebook, Google, Windows Live Messenger, AOL, ICQ, Skype, Jabber and Yahoo! , among others. It also supports push notifications so that we don't miss anything with the application closed. You just need to be able to pin contacts to the screen to make it the perfect application.

Skitch, annotations and drawings but no captures

We continue with Skitch , a screenshot and annotation application that became famous on Mac and has now arrived in Windows 8. The downside is that captures are not an option in this version: only we have the possibility to modify photos already taken, from the camera or from the clipboard.

We can add text, arrows, rectangles, markers, or pixelate elements, something that wasn't in the OS X versions of Skitch. Personally, it's an application that I quite like, and I've been very happy to see it on Windows 8. If you use to manipulate images for blogs or to broadcast screenshots, you have to download Skitch .

FeedReader, the best RSS reader

And finally, an RSS reader could not be missing from this list. The one that I liked the most is FeedReader: it synchronizes perfectly with Google Reader and shows all the information that we are used to seeing in a traditional reader.

We can mark posts as favorites, send them to Internet Explorer or view them directly in the full screen application. In addition, FeedReader supports the same shortcuts as Google Reader (j and k to go back and forth between articles, s to bookmark and m to mark as read). It works pretty well, and hasn't given me any problems. FeedReader costs €2.49, an acceptable price if you are intensive RSS users.

So far our selection. If you have suggestions or you think an app is missing from the list, feel free to share it in the comments.
