Microsoft Remote Desktop is an application that allows us to connect through our smartphone to a computer running Windows Vista or higher, and take control it wherever we are, being able to zoom in on a certain area or making an on-screen keyboard appear.
It is available on Windows Phone 8.1, Android and iOS. For the first mentioned platform, Remote Desktop Update 8.1.1.19 was released yesterday, and while it doesn't include major changes, it does add a few features and quite a few fixes of bugs.
Microsoft Remote Desktop Preview
The first new feature included in this update is the ability to pin to the Start menu a shortcut to any remote desktop that we have configured. Without a doubt, a great advantage to save time for those who are going to use it on a regular basis.
Regarding the on-screen keyboard that we can display at all times, it has been improved by adding the typing prediction capacity (the same as in Windows Phone), and the possibility of using World flow .
Following the trend of the last few weeks, the update adds support for transparent Live Tiles so that it doesn't break with the design of the Start menu if we decide to put a background image.
In addition, an option is now available in the settings section that will allow us to display the desktop wallpaper when we access it remotely, or temporarily replace it with a black background.
How to connect to a Windows 8 computer on the same network?
The easiest way to connect to a computer through this application is if it has Windows 8 installed on it at least one user account through which we access with credentials of a Microsoft account, and that the smartphone is connected by Wi-Fi to the same network.
There are other ways to connect depending on the operating system or the way to connect, but if necessary I would like to make a special article to deal with this topic in more detail and to analyze the application completely. It is possible that for the final version some aspects will change.
"The first thing we will have to do is access System Properties on our Windows 8 computer. A quick way to get there is by the combination Windows key + Q and type allow remote. This will leave us with a single result, Allow remote access to the computer, which is what we are looking for."
If we mark everything in the remote access tab as can be seen in the image, we will have everything ready to start the connection. Now we need to know what our team's name is exactly. If you don't know, you can again press Windows Key + Q and type See computer name. From this section we can consult and modify it. We simply have to go to our Windows Phone and choose the option to add a new remote desktop from this application. To do this, we will have to fill in the following information:
In PC name you have to enter the exact name of the computer, including hyphens or other symbols. You can also choose if you want us to ask for your credentials every time you access this remote desktop or not. In the advanced tab, we see that in Friendly name you can optionally enter a name, with which you can recognize a team among others with terms that are easier for us to remember. We proceed to save the configuration of this new remote desktop, and click on it in the list that will appear. When it asks us to enter our credentials, all we have to do is put the Microsoft account and its password, just as we would do when logging in to Windows 8, for example.
