Why can't I still download Office 2016 with Office 365 for business or university?
In the article we published the other day explaining how to upgrade to Office 2016 using an Office 365 subscription many of you commented that, When trying to download the new version with a company or university account, the same 2013 version was actually downloaded, thus preventing you from enjoying the new features of Office 2016.
"Why does this happen? Is it normal that we have to wait, or does it mean that we are doing something wrong on our end? Microsoft gives us the answer on its page of frequently asked questions about Office 2016, explaining that there are different update courses (branches) for the different versions of Office 365, to to accommodate the needs of businesses and system administrators who may not want to upgrade to Office 2016 right away"
In most cases the final say on when to update is the system administrator of the organization that uses Office 365 , but even so, each edition has different rules, which we detail below:
-
Office 365 Small Business: This edition will be automatically upgraded to Office 2016 during the last quarter of this year (that is, between October and December), but administrators can now allow the 2016 version to be used on new installations.
-
Office 365 ProPlus: This edition is used by most universities, educational establishments, and businesses. The default setting here is to upgrade to Office 2016 during the first quarter of next year However, the administrator can put users on a faster upgrade course (the same as Small Business), thus allowing Office 2016 to be used in new installations.
-
Office 365 on the First Release plan : You can upgrade now.
-
Office 365 Personal or Home: You can also upgrade from now to this edition (which is the one that can be purchased by individual consumers) . Simply follow the steps we explained in the other article.
In summary, if we use Office 365 from a company or university and the 2013 version is downloaded to us when we go to portal.office.com there is not much we can do, nor can Microsoft, except trycontact your system administrator and ask them to speed up the availability of the update.
