With these Cloudflare DNS you can improve the speed and security of your computer's network connection
Table of contents:
With the security of our equipment increasingly in question and with a greater volume of data circulating on the network, it is not surprising that we are more concerned than ever how we access the Internet and what are the parameters used by our equipment.
In this sense, one of the fundamentals within the connection to the network is the one that refers to the DNS used. Some DNS that can be set by our operator or that we choose. This is how those of Google or OpenDNS are well known.Alternatives to which now add the new DNS that Cloudflare has announced.
What is DNS?
Before continuing, let's clarify what this term consists of. DNS stands for Domain Name System and is a database-based technology used to resolve names on networks, that is, to find out the IP address of the machine where the domain to which we want to access is hosted.
When a computer is connected to a network (either the Internet or a home network) it is assigned an IP address. If we are in a network with few computers, it is easy to memorize the IP addresses of each of the computers and thus access them, but what happens if there are billions of devices and each one has a different IP? Well, that would be impossible, that's why there are domains and DNS to translate them
And once clarified, let's go with the news in question. Cloudflare has announced free DNS under IPs 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. DNS that promise to improve network connection speed and protect user privacy.
These DNS are alternative, like the ones we have always seen from Google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and OpenDNS, complementary to which our telephone operator usually incorporates. Those in charge of controlling the traffic on our computers, since the operator can determine access according to which websites they wish to visit.
Privacy and Speed
"In my case I have always used Google&39;s DNS knowing that I am giving up part of my privacy to the big G company. Zero privacy, because they know everything about my habits at the time to navigate. And this is what these new DNS want to eradicate, because they ensure that thanks to them our browsing will have a greater degree of privacy. Something highly valued, especially after the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandal."
To this end, Cloudflare affirms that will not have records of our browsing after 24 hours. These will be deleted so that nobody, neither individuals nor companies, can trade or benefit from them.
In addition, they ensure that the use of these DNS improves connection speed, since they offer an average response time of 14.2 milliseconds, above OpenDNS or Google DNS, which stay at 20.6 and 34.5 milliseconds, respectively.
The problem is that there are a good number of routers, especially those of the operators, that do not allow or at least do not make it easy for us to modify the default DNS.
