This is how you can block advertising in Microsoft Edge
Although Microsoft Edge offers many new features and advantages over Internet Explorer 11, and even over Firefox and Chrome, many users are preferring not to use it as long as it doesn't include support for extensions, which is something Microsoft already promised to offer, but won't be available for a few more months.
Among the extensions that users miss in Edge, the famous filters stand out, which are available as add-ons for all major browsers except Microsoft's. Luckily there is an alternative method to block the in Microsoft Edge, without using extensions.
This consists of blocking the DNS level, editing the hosts file used by the browser.
Important: Do not forget that before executing tricks like these, which involve editing system files, it is advisable to activate the function System Restore and create a restore point, as explained in this article.
Taking the above into consideration, these are the steps to follow:
- Download the hosts.zip file from this address.
- Extract its contents into a folder and then, inside that folder, run as administrator the file mvps.bat.
And ready. With this we should already see much less when browsing in Microsoft Edge. In any case, some particularities of this method must be taken into account.
First of all, this filter is not perfect, as it blocks the from a list of known sites (the list that we load in the hosts file), but that list is not exhaustive or auto-updating, so it will still show up from all those servers that are not included in it.
However, sites that are on the list will be blocked from all Windows applications, including other browsers, Store apps, etc. In this sense, it is a more efficient filter than what we would obtain by installing an extension.
Finally, there is the risk that page loading will slow down a bit, since as the new hosts file is much more large, the Windows DNS cache ends up being overloaded by doing so many queries and retaining the results. If that is our case we can solve the problem with the following steps:
- "Open the Windows registry (Start > type regedit> press Enter)."
- Navigate to the following path within the record:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DnsCache\Parameters
-
"
- Once there, create a new DWORD value with the name MaxCacheTtl>" "
- Also create another DWORD value with the name MaxNegativeCacheTtl>"
- Restart the system.
In most cases there should be no problems after executing the steps above, but if we run into any problems after modifying the hosts file it is possible to restore it to its original condition in 2 ways:
- Rerunning, with administrator permissions, the file mvps.bat located in the downloaded folder.
- Run System Restore.
