Technical reviews about the smallest device in the new range of Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8, there are kicks. Including those of our Xataka colleagues, XatakaMovil.
Today I want to share with the readers of XatakaWindows the experience of daily use of a 620, first of all thanking Nokia Spain for the courtesy of leaving in my hands this small technological marvel.
To be able to value a new smartphone, it is essential to have a starting point. And there is no better than my old mobile, well the one that I get back once the two weeks of revision have passed, an excellent LG Optimus with Windows Phone 7.
This was in its time the "top range" of Windows Phone 7 phones in Spain, until the arrival of the Lumia 800. Therefore, it was an excellent comparator with the new entry-level phone from the Finnish brand.
Thus, with a very close clear reference, bearing in mind that we are talking about a free phone that costs just over €250 , and €6 spent on making a copy of my SD card to a Micro SD, I stuck with the back cover until I could access the battery, insert the chip, close the cover again and press the power button.
Note: Opening the cover that wraps around the back of the phone is a bit nerve-wracking, because you have to put a finger on the rear camera lens, and push like a madman until the case comes off. Giving the feeling that you are going to break the optics or the flash, although this does not happen.
The screen. Good very good
The first impression was very positive given how well the screen is readable in bright sunlight It has a brightness sensor that changes the brightness intensity according to the ambient light. So, for example, the GPS changes from day to night colors every time you enter a tunnel.
Also very nice is the tactile response of the screen, which is quite sensitive. The virtual buttons are a somewhat strange feeling, since I have physical ones on the LG and I'm used to their hardness.
The case is nice but I always feel like I'm going to drop my phone; Probably because it's not mine. The touch is soft, velvety and comfortable, being a telephone to be used with the thumb; which is the opposite of the market trend with huge screens of almost 5 "like those of the 920.
Nokia applications, a poker of aces
The set of applications that the mobile includes, by itself, gives it a significant competitive edge. The navigation software, which even though it is still a bit simple, fulfills all its functions in an outstanding way. The GPS receiver is excellent and fast, especially if I compare it with that of the LG with two years of technological antiquity. The map, which with Google's blocking of native applications for Windows Phone 8 has left the door open to the excellent application provided by Nokia, is complete, truthful and also speaks directly to the browser. Being able to start browsing from any of the two applications. The Nokia transport, which is especially useful for using any means of public transport.
It really is something to consider in the purchase decision: the quality and quantity of software that is part of the device where For now, it is ahead of its direct competition.
Media, videos and photos with the 620
The first thing I want to highlight is the being able to capture screens with the combination of the power button plus the Windows button. It works on any interface screen and is a great advantage that Windows Phone 8 includes.
The camera is far superior to the LG, getting better, sharper, and brighter images. At the height of any compact under €100. Undoubtedly he looks with great envy at the capabilities of his older brothers such as the Lumia 820 and 920, the latter with PureView technology, but it is more than worthy for the "Lomo" type use with which I use the mobile.
The videos also deserve a round of applause. At 720p, they are quite stable and more than decent results are obtained, at the level of what is expected of a low average smartphone. During testing I was at a ski resort with horrible weather outside, and was able to capture images and videos with more than acceptable white balance
Windows Phone 8's masterstroke
The operating system ensures that it runs smoothly on all your devices, since version 7.0. But on this mobile, things are better. You can tell that there is good hardware behind it because the interface and the programs work perfectly and smoothly, as expected from a Windows Phone 8.
Battery life is, as with all modern smartphones, a real pain. Those times when my Nokia lasted a week without recharging, has vanished with these little energy guzzlers So, with everything put in, I haven't been able to get it to reach the two days without running out, which is normal. In other words, I am not going to be able to avoid recharging it at all available times to avoid unexpected shutdowns or at the most inconvenient moment.
The dark side
But I'd be doing an advertorial if I didn't share the not-so-good or downright-bad stuff, though there really isn't much to point to.
On the sides of the on-screen keyboard, tactile sensitivity is lost and many times, too many, when writing I have to be careful because it does not respond correctly to the key pressed. Not that it's an issue, but it's quite noticeable compared to the LG.
Another thing that doesn't work correctly is the luminosity sensor in indoor environmentsAt least in the test unit, it sometimes goes dark and bright again in a slow cycle, but it was annoying when viewing, for example, photos or videos. Often changing the angle of the phone is enough to get it to stabilize at the proper brightness.
To point it out, the headphones it brings are rather average. Therefore, it is more than advisable to acquire better quality ones, since the sound is quite good. Plus, if you pair it with an online music site like GrooveShark or Spotify – and a good data rate – you can listen to music uninterrupted streaming.
The only worrisome bug was that on a single occasion, in two weeks of testing, I got stuck in black And it didn't respond no matter how much I touched buttons and screen. I had to remove the cover and remove the battery for it to physically shut down and reboot the phone; and everything worked perfectly the rest of the time.
Personal conclusions
When the Nokia courier picked up the box containing the mobile, when I left the office I went straight to a large store to see if there was any in stockof any operator or free to buy one.
It really is a very good phone for the price, quality, with a complete software library and smooth operation of Windows Phone 8 and certified applications in the Store.
The only doubt I have, since I haven't found it anywhere to wear it, if it's not worth going for the 820 or even the 920 .
