Table of contents:
Calibrating a monitor is essential when editing photos and videos, as it is important to get the best possible quality to display a reliable resultHowever, to reach acceptable levels in the professional field, it would be necessary to spend more than €60 on a set of software and hardware that would allow us to do so.
But for the domestic environment, where the use that is usually given to the monitor does not go beyond the reproduction of online videos, movies or games, it would be excessive to adopt measures of this type in order to calibrate our monitor. And this is where Windows 8 comes in with its function Calibrate display color
Screen Color Calibration enhances screen colors by allowing you to change the various color settings (value gamma, brightness…). After you have adjusted the various color settings with Display Color Calibration, you will have a new calibration with the new color settings. This new calibration will be associated with the screen and will be used by programs with color management, such as Adobe Photoshop
The color setting you can change and how you can change it will depend on your screen and monitor capabilities. Not all monitors have the same capabilities or color options, so you may not be able to change all color settings when using Color Calibration from the screen.
As soon as the wizard starts, it will ask you to move the Color Calibration window from the screen to the monitor you want to calibrate in case you were working with more than one at the same time. The steps will guide us through different paths depending on whether our monitor allows us to do what we are asked to do or not, as I mentioned before.
When we start, we will have to restore the default values, to proceed to adjust the gamma value. The brightness, contrast, and color balance will be the next and final steps. When finished, we will be able to compare how our monitor looks with the previous configuration and with the one that we will establish if we click accept.
When the color calibration is finished, the assistant will give us the possibility to use ClearType, a technology that promises to improve the quality of the texts displayed on the screens LCD.
To do this we will go through 5 simple steps, where in each one we will simply have to choose the text that is best read. Once we finish, we just have to hit the finish button and Windows will take care of the rest.
To activate this feature we don't have to wait to finish the screen color calibration wizard. By writing ClearType in the search for configuration options we can execute it directly.
