Choose the default programs to open each type of file in Windows 8
Table of contents:
As soon as you install Windows 8, you will see that if you try to open files such as PDFs, you can do so without installing any additional programs, unlike what happened previously in Microsoft operating systems. In this specific case, it is so because we already have the Lector application.
However, what happens if we don't want to open certain files with the applications that open them by default? To do this, below we will explain how to modify these preferences in various ways, without having to access the preferences of each application individually.
"Using Open With…"
"This way of doing it is surely the best known by all users. It consists of simply right-clicking on the file in question, and choosing Open with if it is a file that does not yet have a default application to run."
"If it did, instead of clicking on Open with, hovering the cursor over it would display a list with several options, one of them being Choose Default Program…"
One way or another, we'll see something like this:
"If the application appears among the first results, we simply click on it, paying attention to the check box Use this application for all .X>"
Using the control panel
The other option is to do it through the control panel, which can also be used when we want to modify the default programs for different types of files, instead of just one.
If we enter the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + W, and type Set default programs, we will immediately find a single result that will show us a window like the one you have at the beginning of this section.
From here, we can quickly select the application that we want to use as default in some type of file, and we will immediately see 2 options just below the description:
- Set this program as default: This will cause all file types that can be opened by this application to be opened by default with said application.
- Choose default options for this program: a list of the extensions that the application recognizes will appear, and we can mark the ones we want to assign default to this application.
In this last option, in addition to the extensions we can also choose protocols, such as URL:Acrobat Protocol>"
