Secure all your files by having Windows 8 automatically back them up
Table of contents:
One of the advantages that Windows 8 brings us is the File History, which gives us the possibility of making periodic copies of our files , such as those stored in the libraries, desktop, as well as our contacts and favorites. In addition to being able to specify the interval with which the copy that we keep in a certain unit will be updated, we can also update it manually at any time we want.
The options are diverse, being able to choose between saving it on a removable drive, a disk that we have on our network or any disk on our own PC.Thanks to this, we will be able to recover our files even if the disk they were on has been damaged, restoring them quickly with the backup copy.
Setting Up File History for the First Time
If we press the Windows key + W, or go to the configuration options search directly, and write file history, we will access to the panel from where we can configure this feature in our system.
On the left, we will see the option select unit, from where we can choose in which unit the backup copy that we are going to store will be stored hold. Obviously, the ideal is to locate it in a drive other than the operating system, and if we want to use any removable media, it is time to connect it. We can also choose a network location, using the corresponding button that will appear in the menu that we have just entered.
Once selected, we may not want to copy certain folders that are on our desktop or in libraries. To do this, we have the option exclude folders on the left, from where we can add as many as we need.
We arrive at the section Advanced Configuration From here, as you can see in the attached image, we can select how often we want our copy, being able to choose between minutes, hours or every day. The size of the offline cache, and how long we will keep these copies are other options available in this menu.
If we have devices connected in our HomeGroup, checking the box Recommend this unitWe will send a notice to inform you that there is a place available where you can periodically save files from said equipment within the unit that we are going to use.
When we have everything configured, we return to the File History cover, and click on the activate button. The files will begin to be copied, and from this moment on, the day and time the last copy was made will be indicated. From here, with the option execute now, we are given the possibility of executing the copy without waiting for the established schedule.
And what do you have to do to restore previously backed up files? We simply click on restore personal files, from where we can consult all the versions created, but also navigate between the files even before restoring them.
