Amd announced its reed apu with excavator cores
Finally AMD has presented its new Carrizo APUs that arrive to replace the current Kaveri in portable devices, the new Carrizo APUs come with a great improvement in energy efficiency, so important in this type of device.
The new AMD Carrizo processors integrate the new Excavator cores that are the final evolution of the Bulldozer microarchitecture that arrived in late 2011 along with the high-performance AMD Zambezi processors. Excavator cores have been designed with energy efficiency in mind, so high-density libraries have been used reducing the size of the cores by 23%, the floating point manager by 38%, FMAC units in a 35% and the instruction controller cache 35%. All this together with a new adaptive voltage algorithm has reduced energy consumption by 40% offering the same performance as Kaveri and using the same manufacturing process at 28nm.
If we talk about an AMD APU, we cannot forget the most valued aspect of this type of product, its integrated graphics, which in the case of Carrizo consist of up to 8 Compute Units (CU) for a total of 512 Shader Processors with GCN 1.3 architecture., the same as the one used in the AMD Tonga GPU.
Let's hope that soon we can enjoy new laptops on the market based on the new AMD Carrizo APUs, remember that this is a product focused on improving Kaveri's energy efficiency and we will not see desktop versions.
