The Mantle API first came to light in 2013, an AMD graphical rendering API that was designed to give PC gamers better performance by giving developers the opportunity to work low-level on their games.

AMD Mantle is the forerunner of modern APIs DirectX 12 and Vulkan

AMD Mantle can be considered as a precursor to modern graphical APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan, a force that was intended to drive game development beyond DirectX 11 and OpenGL.

Although the development of this API ended in 2015, its legacy lives on in Vulkan, which is an API derived from the Mantle of the Kronos Group. AMD contributed its Mantle API to the Kronos Group, knowing that its API would never receive widespread adoption due to its unique nature of AMD. Using Mantle as a base, Kronos created the Vulkan API, which has been used to create games like DOOM (2016), RAGE 2, Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, and improve the performance of titles like DOTA 2 and No Man's Sky.

With the release of Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.5.1, AMD has officially dropped support for Mantle, ending the company's innovative API. Those who want to use the legacy API will need to install older drivers on their systems, Radeon Software Adrenalin 19.4.3 or older.

In its short life cycle, the API only had 7 games that used it on PC, including Oxide Games' famous Ashes of the Singularity.
