It has long been known that AMD has been working on a new GPU to succeed Thaiti. This GPU is called Tonga and it is expected to have a similar performance to Thaiti but with a lower consumption. Finally AMD Tonga will be revealed on August 23 at a company event to celebrate its 30th anniversary. 2 versions of the AMD Tonga GPU are expected as usual in the company. A first version will be the tonga pro that will give life to the Radeon R9 285 and the other version will be Tonga XT that will give life to the most powerful Radeon R9 285x, both arrive to replace the Radeon R9 280 and Radeon R9 280x respectively.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Focusing on AMD Tonga's features, they are expected to be based on AMD's GCN 1.1 architecture, just like Hawaii silicon, which will feature XDMA technology that enables crossfire without the need to use a jumper wire to interconnect the graphics cards. The Tonga PRO GPU of the AMD Radeon R9 285 will be the first to appear in early September, it would have 1792 Stream Processors at a base frequency of 918 MHz accompanied by 2 GB of GDDR5 memory at 5500 MHz and attached to a memory interface of 256 bits leading to a bandwidth of 176 GB / s.

On the other hand the Tonga XT GPU of the AMD Radeon R9 285x will arrive a few weeks later, it would have 2048 Stream Processors at a base frequency of 1000 MHz accompanied by 2 GB of GDDR5 memory at 6000 MHz and a memory interface of 256 bits resulting in a bandwidth of 192 GB / s.
