Taiwan's leading tech magazine has just published a story that is sure to make AMD investors very happy. TSMC expects AMD's 7nm orders to double in the second half of 2020, as Apple goes from 7nm to 5nm, leaving a gap that AMD will hopelessly fill.

AMD sales to skyrocket starting in the second half of 2020

TSMC expects AMD to become the largest customer for 7nm processors starting in the second half of 2020, meaning AMD sales will skyrocket starting in the second half of 2020. At least, that's the projection that the company has.

This means that AMD plans to launch its new generation of Ryzen processors during the second half of the year.

This is more or less the same time frame in which Intel will deploy its first 10nm chips (if everything goes according to plan). Unfortunately, however, it appears that the TSNC's 7nm capacity is currently fully reserved and we cannot expect AMD to increase its supply of 7nm parts before Apple moves to 5nm.

First of all, we now know that Apple intends to move to 5nm in the second half of 2020, freeing up space for companies like AMD. Second, TSMC is also adding more capacity to its facilities, so AMD will not only receive leftovers from Apple, but also more wafers. Right now HiSilicon and Qualcomm are ahead of AMD, but the company is set to become TSMC's largest 7nm customer in the second half of 2020, dethroning Qualcomm and HiSilicon. The article further mentions that AMD has reserved an order for 30, 000 wafers in a single "swoop" representing 21% of TSMC's total capacity.

At the same time, Samsung is preparing to increase its 7nm output from 150, 000. NVIDIA and Qualcomm's next-generation products are likely to be based on Samsung's 7nm EUV process, which will be a true example of next-generation lithography and allow for some superfine engraving. NVIDIA has been quite indifferent to its plans to transition to the 7nm process, but we expect that to happen with its Ampere architecture.

AMD promises to take full advantage of the 7nm node with its new Ryzen processors and Navi graphics this year. We will keep you informed.
