Amd epyc 7742 will power a supercomputer to predict the weather
Table of contents:
The AMD Epyc 7742 will be part of the BullSequana XH2000, the Atos supercomputer for the European Weather Forecast Center.
AMD has signed a contract with Atos, a company that will manufacture the BullSequana XH2000. This supercomputer is destined for the European Center for Medium-term Weather Forecasts. It seems to be another sign that the business sector is beginning to prefer AMD over Intel for tasks that are so hard or that require many operations. We tell you everything below.
AMD Epyc 7742 wins the contract
This was announced by AMD this week: it will give heart to the BullSequana XH2000 together with Atos. It will be installed in the aforementioned European institution, which is a research center that operates 24 hours a day and is based in Bologna, Italy.
Recall that the AMD Epyc 7742 is a processor that has 64 cores and 128 threads, along with a 225W TDP. Of course, this supercomputer will not have only 1 CPU; in fact, almost no machine of this type houses only a microprocessor.
In this sense, we do not know how many Epyc will be equipped, but we do know that the XH2000 is capable of hosting 32 modular bays, in which there will be technologies provided by Intel, AMD, ARM or Nvidia. Furthermore, the chassis is cooled by liquid cooling.
The CTO of the Atos group, Sophie Proust, has said the following.
This new solution will optimize the current ECMWF workflow to enable it to send vastly improved numerical weather predictions.
However, the most important thing is that it is a long-term collaboration in which we will work closely with the ECMWF to explore new technologies in order to be ready for the next generation apps
This equipment is expected to start at full blast in early 2021. In addition, researchers from more than 30 countries will be able to access it. The goal is to obtain high resolution weather forecasts within a radius of 10 kilometers.
