Until now we had FreeSync and FreeSync 2, two AMD's proprietary display standards that help make video games more fluid without frame drop or frame instability. Now there are two new standards called FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro.

FreeSync Premium and Premium Pro are announced at CES 2020

FreeSync Premium would become the first 'tier' and supports 120Hz screens with a resolution of 1080p (FHD), in addition to adding LFC technology that compensates for the low frame rate per second.

What the LFC does is make sure that the frame rate doesn't vary even when the game drops below the minimum frame rate supported by the screen. This ensures a smooth gameplay even with intermittent drops in the frame rate.

The FreeSync Premium Pro level is what was previously known as FreeSync 2 HDR. AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certified displays include high-precision luminance testing and a wide color gamut to enable a gaming experience with exceptional HDR.

FreeSync FreeSync Premium FreeSync Premium Pro ( FreeSync 2 HDR)
  • No tearing No flicker Low latency
  • At least 120 Hz with minimal FHD resolution LFC technology No tearing No flicker Low latency
  • HDRA support and capabilities At least 120 Hz with minimal FHD resolution LFC technology No tearing Flicker free Low latency in SDR and HDR

The FreeSync entry level remains the industry foundation for monitors, laptops, and televisions that have been designed and tested to meet a standard of performance quality. Regardless of the level, all FreeSync monitors go through a complete certification process, which tests various aspects such as the absence of typical defects such as 'screen tearing' or 'stuttering'.

AMD commented that there are already more than 1000 monitors certified to run on FreeSync technology. For more information, visit AMD's official blog.
